# Planners, Calendars & Dated Goods

A planner is a page layout you will live with for a year, so the layout decides more than the brand. Pick the form (book, ring binder, wall or desk calendar), how much time each spread holds, and when it starts. Then check size and paper, because thin paper is how a page-a-day book stays carryable.

## How it works

A planner divides a fixed amount of paper among a fixed number of days. The layout sets the division: a page per day, a week across two facing pages (a spread), or a month per spread. Within a weekly spread, a vertical layout gives each day a column, often with hours running down it, and a horizontal layout gives each day a row. Dates are either printed, so the book starts in a set month (January, or July for the school year), or left blank so you write them in. Everything else trades against the page count. More pages per day means a thicker, heavier book unless the maker uses thinner paper, and thinner paper lets more of the previous page show through. Calendars apply the same division to a single sheet per month that hangs or stands. [1] [2] [17] [8]

| Family | What it is | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Bound planner | A sewn, glued or coiled book with the dates already printed for one period. | People who carry one book all year. |
| Ring or refillable planner | A binder whose six or seven rings take loose insert pages, so you swap the year without replacing the cover. | People who keep a cover for years and mix diary, notes and lists. |
| Wall calendar | A sheet per month that hangs, either a picture with a small grid or a big writing grid. | A household or office that needs one shared view. |
| Desk calendar | A standing easel, a page-a-day block or a large pad that lies on the desk. | One person at one desk who does not carry it. |

1. **Form.** Bound or spiral book, ring binder, inserts, wall or desk calendar?
The forms share almost no products, and the answer decides whether paper, rings or a calendar style is the next thing that matters.
If ring binder planner or ring binder inserts: ask Ring format, Time per spread; skip Binding, Half-year volumes, Calendar style, Calendar size.
If wall calendar or desk calendar: ask Calendar style, Calendar size, Start month; skip Paper weight, Paper stock, Ring format, Half-year volumes, Page size.
If bound planner: ask Time per spread, Page size; skip Ring format, Calendar style, Calendar size.
   Skip if already known: product_form, query_names_calendar, query_names_ring_inserts.

2. **Time per spread.** Page a day, a week across two pages, both, or months?
Layout is the choice experts say people get wrong and then abandon the planner over. Daily against weekly also sets page count, weight and the paper the book needs.
If weekly: ask Weekly layout, Week start.
If daily or weekly and daily: ask Half-year volumes, Page size.
If monthly: skip Weekly layout, Half-year volumes.
   Skip if already known: time_span.

3. **Start month.** January start, the school year, starting right away, or undated?
A dated book loses a month of use for every month it starts before you buy it. Undated books never expire, which is why the add-on treats this as the planner gate.
If undated: skip Holidays printed, Dates covered.
If January or July (academic) or April (Japanese school year) or any month you choose: ask Week start.
   Skip if already known: start_month.

4. **Page size.** Pocket-size A6, bag-size B6 or A5, or desk-size B5?
Hemlock & Oak sells its layouts in five sizes and Planning Engineered lists six insert sizes. Asking where the planner lives maps to page sizes, and a planner too big to carry stops being used.
   Skip if already known: carry_size, page_size, ring_format.

## What to surface

### Form

Whether the product is a bound planner book (sewn, glued, stapled or coiled), a ring binder planner, loose inserts for a ring binder, a wall calendar or a desk calendar. The forms solve different jobs: a book or binder is carried and written in daily, a wall calendar is a shared household view, and a desk calendar stays at one desk. Calendars.com shops by these formats. Binders and their inserts add a fit question books never have: size and ring pattern must match. Coil books sold as 'soft ring' or 'twin-ring' (KOKUYO, Mnemosyne) are bound planners; Erin Condren sells its coiled books apart from its six-ring agenda. [17] [8] [2] [3] [13]

Values: bound planner, ring binder planner, ring binder inserts, wall calendar, desk calendar.
Question to ask: Bound or spiral book, ring binder, inserts, wall or desk calendar?

Used as: top-level split, filter. Data: on the listing, backfill cost none. Look for it as: The product type word in the title (planner, organiser, insert, refill, wall calendar, desk pad, easel). Calendar retailers use it as their top navigation.

### Time per spread

How much time one pair of facing pages covers: one day per page, one week, one month, or weekly spreads plus daily pages in the same book. JetPens matches monthly to jotting events, weekly to planning the days ahead and daily to listing a routine. Daily gives the most room but loses the week at a glance and needs far more pages; Hemlock & Oak calls its combined book its heaviest. Multi-year books (one page per date over three or five years) are journals and are found by name, not by this question. [2] [1] [15] [5]

Values: daily, weekly, weekly and daily, monthly, multi-year.
Question to ask: Page a day, a week across two pages, both, or months?

Used as: top-level split, filter. Data: on the listing, backfill cost low. Look for it as: Leads brand-store titles: Moleskine 'Weekly, 18 months, large, soft cover'; Hobonichi 'A6 Size / Daily'. Amazon titles not checked.
When the title omits it, the sample-page photos settle it; read the description for 'day per page' or 'week to view'.
Chart: Spread schematic.

### Start month

The first dated month in the book, or undated if you write the dates yourself. Leuchtturm1917's academic planners start in July and run 18 months. Japanese editions also come April-start, matching Japan's April school year, and Erin Condren lets students choose any start month. Undated books never go stale, though JetPens notes skipped dated days become discouraging blank pages. Answer rule: school year maps to July, or April where school starts in April; starting right away maps to undated, chosen-month and dated books ranked by months_left. [12] [14] [7] [3] [20] [2] [15]

Values: January, July (academic), April (Japanese school year), any month you choose, undated.
Question to ask: January start, the school year, starting right away, or undated?

Used as: top-level split, filter. Data: on the listing, backfill cost low. Look for it as: In brand-store titles and names: Hobonichi '(January start)' and 'April-start', 'Academic' or 'Undated' in the title. Moleskine '18 months' or '2026/2027' gives the span, not the first month.
A two-year span in the title (2026/2027) means academic or 18-month; read the first dated page in the photos to confirm the month.
Chart: Months remaining timeline.

### Page size

The page size by name: Pocket, A6, Personal, B6, A5, Half Letter, A5+, 7 × 9 in, or B5 and larger (which takes 8 × 10 in). Size decides whether the planner travels, and one that stays home stops being used (Hemlock & Oak). Answer rule: pocket maps to Pocket and A6, bag to Personal, B6 and A5, desk to A5 and larger. A5 sits under bag and desk on purpose: Hemlock & Oak calls it the middle ground, so both answers show it and they separate on the sizes around it. For binders, Planning Engineered allows only Pocket in a pocket (see judgements). [8] [9] [1] [2] [6] [13]

Values: Pocket, A6, Personal, B6, A5, Half Letter, A5+, 7 × 9 in, B5 and larger.
Question to ask: Pocket-size A6, bag-size B6 or A5, or desk-size B5?

Used as: top-level split, filter. Data: on the listing, backfill cost low. Look for it as: Size name in the title or variant picker (Moleskine pocket, large, XL; Hobonichi A6, A5; Erin Condren 7x9, 8x10; Hemlock & Oak A5+). Brand words like 'large' need a lookup to millimetres.
Map brand size words to page dimensions once per brand; store millimetres in sizing.dimensions.
Chart: Nested page outlines.

### Calendar style

Whether a wall or desk calendar is mainly a picture with a small date grid, or a large grid built for writing in. Calendar retailers separate picture calendars, shopped by theme, from organisation calendars: big grid, family organiser, desk pads, magnetic and vertical wall calendars. A themed picture calendar leaves little room to write; a family organiser gives each person a column. Picture calendars are then found by theme (animals, sports, art), which comes from the query and search, not from a facet. [17] [18]

Values: picture, big grid or organiser, page-a-day block.
Question to ask: A picture to look at, or space to write plans?

Used as: filter. Data: on the listing, backfill cost low. Look for it as: Retailer category (Calendars.com 'Big Grid', 'Family Organizer', 'Page-a-Day') and the theme in the title.

### Half-year volumes

Whether a daily planner comes as two six-month books instead of one. A full-year page-a-day book is heavy. Hobonichi's Avec and Hemlock & Oak's Daily Duo split the same pages into two half-year books, so you only carry six months. It is the main fix for a daily planner that stays at home. [6] [1]

Question to ask: One thick book, or two six-month halves?

Used as: filter, shown on the card. Data: on the listing, backfill cost low. Look for it as: In the product name (Avec, Duo, '6-month book').
Names like Avec and Duo need a per-brand lookup to mean two six-month books.

### Week start

Whether each printed week begins on Monday or Sunday. ISO 8601 weeks start on Monday, and JetPens says many of the weekly planners it sells start on Monday, which takes adjustment for people used to Sunday. Hemlock & Oak sells its Signature Vertical Weekly in a Sunday Start format as well. Week numbers, where printed, follow the ISO rule that week 1 holds the first Thursday of January. [11] [3] [1] [6] [7]

Values: Monday, Sunday.
Question to ask: Weeks starting Monday or Sunday?

Used as: filter. Data: needs research, backfill cost medium. Look for it as: In Hobonichi edition names ('English edition (Monday start)') and Hemlock & Oak product names; elsewhere only in sample photos.
Read the first weekly spread in the photos.

### Calendar size

The retailer's size name for a wall or desk calendar, from mini to poster. Calendar retailers shop by size beside theme: Calendars.com lists Mini Wall, Pocket Wall and Poster calendars, and Calendar Club UK sorts by Mini, Slim, Square, A4, A3 and Large. Size decides where the calendar hangs and how big each date box is. The 'standard' value is our label for the A4 middle. [17] [18]

Values: mini or pocket, slim, square, A4 or standard, A3, large or poster.
Question to ask: Mini, slim, standard, or poster-size calendar?

Used as: filter. Data: on the listing, backfill cost low. Look for it as: Retailer size navigation and the title (Calendars.com 'Mini Wall', 'Poster'; Calendar Club 'Slim', 'A3').
Map publisher size words to these names once per publisher.

### Weekly layout

How a weekly spread divides the seven days: columns with hours down each, columns split into blocks such as morning, afternoon and evening, rows across both pages, or rows on the left with a notes page on the right. Hourly columns suit days of fixed appointments, because a two-hour meeting fills a two-hour block (Hemlock & Oak). Block columns split each day into morning, afternoon and evening (Bespoke). Rows suit list-makers but hide the schedule. Erin Condren sells vertical, hourly, horizontal and dashboard as four layouts, so 'vertical' alone does not say whether hours are printed. Hemlock & Oak says buying the layout you think you should use is the big reason planners get abandoned. [1] [3] [16] [13]

Values: vertical, hourly, vertical, blocks, horizontal (day rows), horizontal with notes page, other (such as dashboard).
Question to ask: Hour-by-hour columns, day columns in blocks, or rows for lists?

Used as: filter, shown on the card. Data: on the listing, backfill cost medium. Look for it as: Brand titles say 'vertical', 'hourly', 'horizontal' or 'dashboard' (Erin Condren layout picker, Moleskine 'Weekly Vertical'). 'Vertical' alone does not separate hourly from blocks; the spread photo does.
Read the spread photo for every 'vertical' listing: times printed down the side mean hourly, unlabelled sections mean blocks.
Chart: Spread schematic.

### Ring format

For ring binders and their inserts, the insert size and ring pattern, such as six-ring Personal or six-ring A5. Within one size, six-ring inserts move between Filofax, Plotter and Sterling Ink binders, but Pocket rings drift a couple of millimetres between brands, and a six-ring Personal page will not sit in a seven-ring Classic binder (Planning Engineered). Personal pages are 95 × 171 mm. The size name also sets the page size, so it answers the carry question for binder buyers. Ring diameter sets how many sheets fit before the rings push open (Philofaxy). [8] [9] [10]

Values: Pocket 6-ring, Personal 6-ring, A5 6-ring, Classic 7-ring, other.
Question to ask: Personal, A5, Pocket, or another binder size?

Used as: filter. Data: needs research, backfill cost low. Look for it as: Binder brand pages give size name and ring diameter in mm; insert listings name the size they fit.
Size name usually implies the pattern; record ring diameter in markdown when stated.

### Binding

How the pages are held: stitched and glued, coiled (spiral), stapled, or rings. JetPens notes stapled planners are light, stitched books feel sturdier, and twin-ring coils flip easily and allow perforated tear-out pages. Stitched books that open 180 degrees lie flat to write in (Hobonichi). Coils such as Erin Condren's fold back on themselves but add thickness. Desk calendars come ringed too (JetPens lists a Midori Desk Ring Calendar). [2] [3] [5] [13]

Values: stitched or sewn, coil or spiral, stapled, rings.
Question to ask: Sewn book that lies flat, or spiral that folds back?

Used as: shown on the card. Data: on the listing, backfill cost none. Look for it as: Title word (coiled, spiral, hardcover); the photo shows it.

### Dates covered

The first and last month the dated pages cover, for example January to December 2026 or July 2026 to December 2027. Span varies within one brand: Moleskine sells 12, 15 and 18 month planners and Leuchtturm1917 a 16 month monthly. A long span gives a run-in before the year starts but adds pages. The span is what turns the start month into the months you will actually use from today. [15] [12] [7]

Used as: shown on the card. Data: on the listing, backfill cost medium. Look for it as: Hobonichi brand pages state both ends ('January-start version: January 2026 to December 2026'); titles give only a month count (18 months) or the years (2026/2027).
When the title gives only a month count, read the first dated page in the photos for the first month; store first and last month, with the raw string in the add-on's date_range_raw.
Chart: Months remaining timeline.

### Paper weight

How heavy the paper is in grams per square metre (gsm), a proxy for thickness. Thin paper is how a page-a-day book stays carryable: Hemlock & Oak prints its biggest books on 70 gsm and says the cost is more show-through than its thicker Heritage paper. JetPens says the thin Tomoe River paper in Hobonichi books shows some writing through and may bleed with fountain pens. Weight alone does not predict ink handling; coating and sizing matter, so treat makers' fountain-pen claims as claims. [1] [4] [3] [19] [13]

Range: Of the 16 JetPens table cells that state a gsm, 13 fall between 70 and 84.6 and three are 52 gsm, the weight Goulet also gives for Tomoe River. Most listings name the paper stock instead.

Used as: shown on the card, sortable. Data: needs research, backfill cost medium. Look for it as: Stated on a minority of listings: most JetPens table rows name the stock rather than a gsm (see paper_stock). US brands may quote pounds (Erin Condren '80 LB'); Hemlock & Oak gives both units for its thick paper, so convert only where a brand states both.
Brand pages for the top 100 daily planners, where weight matters most; when only the stock is named, leave gsm empty rather than guess.
Chart: Paper weight against pages.

### Holidays printed

Which country's public holidays, if any, are printed on the dated pages. It is the hidden ingredient of a dated book. Hobonichi's Japanese editions print Japanese holidays and the Rokuyo fortune cycle, while its English Cousin prints no holidays because it is sold worldwide. A buyer in another country gets someone else's holidays, or none, and finds out in January. [6] [7]

Used as: shown on the card. Data: needs research, backfill cost medium. Look for it as: Brand detail pages only; rarely in titles.
Brand page or monthly-calendar photo; backfill the top N imported and English-edition planners first.

### Paper stock

The named paper a planner is printed on, such as Tomoe River, Midori MD or a maker's house paper. Most planner listings, specialist tables included, name the paper rather than give a weight: JetPens rows read 'Tomoe River paper' or 'Midori MD paper', and Hobonichi names Tomoe River without a gsm. The name carries what the weight misses, such as how ink sits, so record it first and the gsm beside it when stated. [3] [5] [1] [19]

Used as: shown on the card. Data: on the listing, backfill cost low. Look for it as: JetPens 'Features' column; brand pages (Hobonichi Tomoe River; Hemlock & Oak Heritage and Archivist).
Map a stock name to gsm only where a seller states the weight (Goulet sells Tomoe River sheets as 52 gsm).

## Numbers worth computing

| Metric | Formula | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Months of use left (months) | `months_between(max(today, first_month(date_range)), last_month(date_range)) + 1; undated books have no limit` | A January-start 2026 planner bought in October 2026 has 3 months left. This is the number a buyer needs late in the year, when last year's stock and next year's books sit side by side. |
| Price per usable month (currency per month) | `price / months_left` | Compares an 18-month academic book with a 12-month one on what is actually left to use, and shows when a discounted older year is no bargain. |
| Writing space per day (cm²) | `page_width_mm × page_height_mm / 100 × pages_per_day, where pages_per_day is 1 for daily, 1 + 2/7 for weekly and daily, 2/7 for a weekly across both pages, 1/7 for horizontal with notes page, about 2/30 for monthly` | Size and layout trade against each other: an A6 daily gives about 155 cm² per day, about 75% more than an A5 weekly's 89 cm², and an A5 weekly with a notes page leaves the days about 44 cm². A rough figure, since margins and headers are ignored. |

## What you give up

- A page a day holds a schedule, a list and a journal, but the book gets heavy and you cannot see the week in one view. Hemlock & Oak tells unsure buyers to buy a weekly first. [1] Board branch: "See more weekly planners".
- Thin paper fits a year of daily pages into a carryable book, but writing shows through and wet fountain-pen ink can bleed. Thick paper hides the last page but makes big books heavy. [1] [4] Board branch: "See more thick-paper planners".
- Hour columns make time visible and over-booking obvious, but an empty hourly grid can feel like pressure on unstructured days. Rows or blocks free the page but hide the schedule. [1] [16] [3] Board branch: "See more horizontal weeklies".
- Undated books never expire and leave no guilty blank days, but you write every date and lose the nudge of a printed one. [2] [1] Board branch: "See more undated planners".
- Rings let you remove finished pages and keep a cover for years, but overstuffed rings push open and every insert must match the binder's size and pattern. [8] [10] Board branch: "See more bound planners".

## How to draw it

**Spread schematic** (other, shows Time per spread, Weekly layout). A small drawing of the open spread with the day boxes shows vertical against horizontal at a glance, which words do not. Used today by Brands publish sample spreads and free printable layouts (Hemlock & Oak); JetPens tables label each planner's format.. [1] [3]

**Nested page outlines** (other, shows Page size). Page sizes drawn to scale inside each other make A6 against A5 against Personal obvious, including that A5 is twice A6. Used today by JetPens photographs planners side by side; Planning Engineered tabulates the six ring sizes.. [2] [8]

**Months remaining timeline** (timeline, shows Dates covered, Start month). A bar per planner from first to last month, with today marked, shows how much of each book is already past. Used today by Proposal..

**Paper weight against pages** (two axis map, shows Paper weight). Plotting gsm against page count shows which big books stay light by using thin paper and will show more through. Used today by Proposal, from the trade-off Hemlock & Oak describes..

## Words you will meet

- **Spread**. Two facing pages seen together when the book is open.
- **Page-a-day**. A layout that gives each date its own page.
- **Vertical layout**. A weekly spread where each day is a column, marked hour by hour or split into blocks.
- **Hourly layout**. A vertical weekly spread with times printed down each day's column.
- **Horizontal layout**. A weekly spread where each day is a row across the page.
- **Horizontal with memo**. A week of rows on the left page and a blank notes page on the right.
- **Undated planner**. A planner with the layout printed but the dates left for you to fill in.
- **Academic planner**. A planner that starts with the school year: usually July, or April for Japanese editions.
- **18-month planner**. A dated planner covering a year and a half; Leuchtturm1917's academic one starts in July.
- **gsm**. Grams per square metre, the weight of the paper, which tracks its thickness.
- **Show-through**. Seeing the shadow of writing from the other side of the page.
- **Bleed-through**. Ink soaking through to mark the other side of the page.
- **Paper stock**. The named paper a book is printed on, such as Tomoe River or MD paper.
- **Tomoe River paper**. A very thin Japanese paper used in Hobonichi books that takes ink smoothly.
- **A5, A6, B6**. International paper sizes; A5 is 148 × 210 mm, A6 is half that, B6 sits between.
- **Personal size**. The tall narrow Filofax page, 95 × 171 mm, also called Bible size.
- **Ring pattern**. How many rings a binder has and how they are spaced, which inserts must match.
- **Insert**. A loose, hole-punched page made to clip into a ring binder.
- **ISO week number**. A week count where weeks start on Monday and week 1 holds the year's first Thursday.
- **Big grid calendar**. A wall calendar built around large date boxes for writing, not a picture.

## Where we made a call

- Matching the layout to how your days run matters more than any other choice; the wrong layout is the main reason planners get abandoned. (confidence medium). Hemlock & Oak says so directly and JetPens frames its whole guide around frequency and layout. Both sell planners; no independent study was found. [1] [2]
- Paper weight predicts show-through but not how fountain-pen ink behaves. (confidence medium). Sources disagree. Hobonichi says thin Tomoe River holds ink well; JetPens found some show-through and possible bleed with fountain pens; Hemlock & Oak sells 70 gsm as fountain-pen friendly. We read gsm as opacity and leave ink claims to the paper name. [5] [4] [1]
- Within one size name, six-ring inserts move between most binder brands; across size names or ring counts they do not. (confidence medium). Planning Engineered states it, with a caveat: Pocket rings drift a couple of millimetres between brands, so measure first. Philofaxy's table covers Filofax only and shows six rings ('2 x 3') across sizes; it does not test other brands. [8] [9]
- A6 counts as pocket size for bound books; for ring binders only Pocket fits a pocket. (confidence medium). Sources disagree. Hemlock & Oak calls A6 'Pocket and small-bag size'; Planning Engineered, writing about binders, says 'Pocket, and nothing bigger'. Our reading: rings add bulk a bound book lacks, so each source holds for its own form. Binder buyers answer ring_format instead. [1] [8]
- Late in the year, months left is worth showing on every dated planner card. (confidence medium). Our call, from the JetPens point that skipped dated days become waste and from stores selling two years at once in autumn. [2] [15]
- For wall and desk calendars, paper weight stops mattering; style, size and theme decide. (confidence low). Our reading of how Calendars.com and Calendar Club organise their catalogs; no expert source discusses calendar paper. Binding still matters for desk calendars (JetPens lists a Midori Desk Ring Calendar). [17] [18] [3]
