# Makeup Tool Cleansers, Palettes, Cases & Mirrors

This leaf bundles four accessories around the makeup brush rather than the brush itself: cleansers that strip product from bristles, mixing palettes artists blend on, cases that store and transport tools, and mirrors that light the face while applying makeup. Each type has its own spec.

## How it works

A cleanser either dissolves oil-based makeup with an alcohol/solvent spray that wipes off and air-dries in seconds, or lifts it with a surfactant soap bar or liquid shampoo that needs lathering, rinsing, and longer drying. A mixing palette is a flat or thumbholed non-porous surface — usually stainless steel, glass, or disposable paper — that an artist blends foundation or face paint on before application; steel and glass wipe clean, paper is tossed. A case is a soft zippered pouch, roll-up wrap, or hard-shell box with slots or compartments that keep brush heads separated in transit. A mirror is a reflective surface, often ringed with LED lights switchable between two or three color temperatures and magnified 1x to 10x in sections, so a user sees true color and fine detail while applying makeup.

1. **Product type.** A cleanser, a mixing palette, a case, or a mirror?
These are four unrelated objects with unrelated specs — cleanser chemistry, palette material, case construction, mirror optics — so this fork decides which facet set to ask next.
If cleanser: ask Cleanser format; skip Palette material, Surface form, Palette size, Reusable or disposable, Capacity, Case material, Closure, Form factor, Lighted or plain, Magnification, Light color setting, Power source, Charge duration, Mount type, Electrical safety mark.
If palette: ask Palette material; skip Cleanser format, Cleaning agent, Brush, sponge, or both, Rinse or no-rinse, Capacity, Case material, Closure, Form factor, Lighted or plain, Magnification, Light color setting, Power source, Charge duration, Mount type, Electrical safety mark.
If case: ask Case material; skip Cleanser format, Cleaning agent, Brush, sponge, or both, Rinse or no-rinse, Palette material, Surface form, Palette size, Reusable or disposable, Lighted or plain, Magnification, Light color setting, Power source, Charge duration, Mount type, Electrical safety mark.
If mirror: ask Lighted or plain; skip Cleanser format, Cleaning agent, Brush, sponge, or both, Rinse or no-rinse, Palette material, Surface form, Palette size, Reusable or disposable, Capacity, Case material, Closure, Form factor.
Skip if already known: a query that already names cleanser, palette, case, or mirror, an earlier answer naming one of these four product types.

2. **Cleanser format.** Solid bar, liquid bottle, spray, or wipe?
Format decides use: a bar needs wetting and lathering, a spray wipes dry in seconds, a wipe is single-use — this sets what to ask about agent and rinse next.
If spray: skip Rinse or no-rinse.
   If solid_bar: ask Cleaning agent.
Skip if already known: a query naming solid, bar, liquid, spray, or wipe cleanser.

3. **Lighted or plain.** Lighted, or a plain mirror?
Lighting decides whether color-temperature, power-source, and safety-mark questions matter at all; a plain mirror skips all three.
If unlit: skip Light color setting, Power source, Charge duration, Electrical safety mark.
If lighted: ask Light color setting, Power source, Charge duration.
Skip if already known: an earlier answer naming lighted, LED, or 'no light' for a mirror.

## What to surface

### Product type

Whether the item is a brush/sponge cleanser, a mixing palette, a storage case, or a mirror. Each of the four is judged on a completely different spec. Asking this first avoids asking about rinse time on a mirror or magnification on a cleanser. [5] [4] [6] [1]

Values: cleanser, palette, case, mirror.
Question to ask: A cleanser, a mixing palette, a case, or a mirror?

Used as: top-level split, filter. Data: derived from listing fields, backfill cost low. Look for it as: Derive from the product title and category breadcrumb ('brush cleaner', 'mixing palette', 'brush case/organizer', 'makeup mirror').
Title keyword match covers nearly every listing across all four types.

### Lighted or plain

Whether the mirror has built-in lighting (usually LED) or is a plain, unlit mirror. A lighted mirror lets a buyer see true color indoors at night; it also drags in power source, color-temperature, and electrical-safety questions that a plain mirror never raises. [1] [2]

Values: lighted, unlit.
Question to ask: Lighted, or a plain mirror?

Used as: top-level split, filter. Data: needs research, backfill cost low. Look for it as: Stated on brand spec pages (simplehuman, fancii), title usually says 'LED Lighted Mirror' vs plain 'Mirror'; not yet confirmed as a field on third-party retail listings.
Title keyword match on 'LED'/'lighted'/'light up'.

### Cleanser format

Whether the cleanser is a solid bar, a liquid in a bottle, a spray, or a single-use wipe. Format decides the whole routine: a bar or liquid needs wetting, lathering, and rinsing before brushes dry; a spray dissolves product and air-dries in seconds with no rinse; a wipe is grab-and-go for a single tool between looks. [5] [7]

Values: solid_bar, liquid_bottle, spray, wipe.
Question to ask: Solid bar, liquid bottle, spray, or wipe?

Used as: top-level split, filter. Data: on the listing, backfill cost low. Look for it as: Almost always in the title ('Brush Soap', 'Brush Shampoo', 'Brush Cleaner Spray', 'Sanitizer Wipes').
Title keyword match; default to liquid_bottle when the title only says 'cleanser' with no format word, since bottled liquid is the most listed format.
Chart: position on a drying-time axis, spray fastest, bar slowest.

### Palette material

What the mixing surface is made of: stainless steel, glass, acrylic/plastic, disposable paper, or ceramic. Stainless steel and glass are non-porous and wipe clean between colors or clients, which is why professional lines default to steel; disposable paper sheets are tossed after one use instead of cleaned, trading reusability for zero cross-contamination risk. [4] [8]

Values: stainless_steel, glass, acrylic_or_plastic, disposable_paper, ceramic_or_porcelain.
Question to ask: Steel, glass, plastic, or disposable paper?

Used as: filter, shown on the card. Data: on the listing, backfill cost low. Look for it as: Almost always in the title ('Stainless Steel Mixing Palette', 'Disposable Mixing Palette Paper').
Title keyword match; default to stainless_steel when the title just says 'mixing palette' with no material word, since it is the professional default.
Chart: position on a reusability axis, steel/glass most reusable, paper least.

### Magnification

How much larger the reflection appears, from true-size (1x) up to roughly 10x for fine detail work. 1x shows the whole face true-to-size for general application; 7-10x is for precision tasks like eyeliner or tweezing, where seeing the actual scale would make the work impossible — most lighted mirrors split the glass so both are available at once. [1] [3]

Range: 1 to 10 x (magnification factor).
Question to ask: What magnification — true size, 5x, or higher for detail work?

Used as: filter, shown on the card. Data: needs research, backfill cost low. Look for it as: Stated on brand spec pages (simplehuman, fancii), usually in the title too ('10x Magnifying Mirror'); not yet confirmed as a field on third-party retail listings.
Title number-with-x match; a mirror with no magnification word is 1x/true-size.
Chart: position on a 1x-10x magnification scale.

### Brush, sponge, or both

Whether the cleanser is formulated and marketed for brushes only, or safe for makeup sponges too. Some cleansers are sold explicitly as safe for both bristle and sponge foam; others are marketed brush-only, so a buyer who also owns a blending sponge needs to check this before using a brush-only formula on it. [5]

Values: brush_only, sponge_and_brush, sponge_only.
Question to ask: Just for brushes, or for sponges too?

Used as: filter. Data: on the listing, backfill cost low. Look for it as: In the title or short description ('Sponge & Brush Cleaner' vs plain 'Brush Cleaner').
Title keyword match on 'sponge'; default to brush_only when the title says only 'brush'.

### Case material

What the case's shell or body is made of: soft fabric/nylon, leather or faux leather, hard-shell plastic, or silicone. A soft fabric case packs flat and light for a kit bag but offers little impact protection; a hard-shell case protects brush heads from crushing in checked luggage at the cost of bulk and weight. [6] [9]

Values: soft_fabric_nylon, leather_or_faux_leather, hard_shell_plastic, silicone.
Question to ask: Soft fabric, leather, hard-shell, or silicone?

Used as: filter. Data: on the listing, backfill cost low. Look for it as: Usually in the title ('Soft Professional Travel Makeup Case', 'Hard Case').
Title keyword match; default to soft_fabric_nylon when unstated, since it is the most common case material.

### Form factor

The case's overall shape: a flat travel case, a roll-up wrap, a standing countertop organizer, or a shoulder/kit bag. A flat travel case fits in a suitcase; a standing organizer is meant to live on a counter and is not built for transport; a roll-up wrap is the form pro artists carry between jobs because it opens flat to show every brush at once. [6] [9]

Values: flat_travel_case, roll_up_wrap, standing_organizer, shoulder_or_kit_bag.
Question to ask: Flat travel case, roll-up, standing organizer, or kit bag?

Used as: filter. Data: on the listing, backfill cost low. Look for it as: Usually in the title ('Travel Makeup Case', 'Makeup Organizer - Large', 'Makeup Kit Bag').
Title keyword match.

### Power source

How the mirror's light is powered: corded plug-in, USB-rechargeable battery, or disposable batteries. A plug-in mirror never runs out of charge but is tied to an outlet; a USB-rechargeable model is portable and avoids the running cost and waste of disposable batteries, at the cost of needing a periodic recharge. [1] [2]

Values: plug_in_corded, usb_rechargeable, disposable_battery, both.
Question to ask: Plugged in, USB-rechargeable, disposable batteries, or both?

Used as: filter. Data: needs research, backfill cost low. Look for it as: Usually in the title or spec table on brand pages ('Plug-In', 'USB-C Rechargeable', 'Battery Operated'); not yet confirmed as a field on third-party retail listings.
Keyword match on power words in the title or spec table; some spec tables list both Plug-In and USB-C cord/adapter for the same unit, map that case to 'both' rather than picking one.

### Mount type

How the mirror is held or placed: on a tabletop stand, mounted to a wall, handheld/compact, suction-mounted, or clipped to a car visor. A tabletop stand mirror lives at a vanity; a suction or visor mount travels on a windshield or bathroom wall; a handheld compact goes in a bag — the mount decides where the mirror can actually be used, independent of how good its light or magnification is. [3] [1]

Values: tabletop_stand, wall_mount, handheld_compact, suction_mount, car_visor_clip.
Question to ask: Counter stand, wall mount, handheld, suction, or visor clip?

Used as: filter. Data: needs research, backfill cost low. Look for it as: Usually in the title on brand pages ('Travel Mirror', 'Car Visor Mirror', 'Suction Mirror', 'Vanity Mirror'); not yet confirmed as a field on third-party retail listings.
Title keyword match.

### Cleaning agent

What actually lifts the makeup: a denatured-alcohol/solvent base, or a surfactant/soap base. Alcohol-based sprays dissolve oil-based pigment fast and dry with no rinse, which is why pros use them between clients; surfactant soap bars and shampoos clean more gently and condition bristle but need water and dry time, which matters for anyone who only owns one set of brushes. [7] [5]

Values: alcohol_or_solvent, surfactant_or_soap, mixed, unspecified.

Used as: filter, shown on the card. Data: needs research, backfill cost medium. Look for it as: Not a standard field; read the ingredients list or ask for 'alcohol-free' vs 'quick-dry spray' wording in the description.
Keyword-match 'spray'/'quick-dry'/'alcohol' to alcohol_or_solvent and 'shampoo'/'soap'/'bar' to surfactant_or_soap; mark unspecified otherwise rather than guessing.
Chart: position on a dry-time axis, alcohol/solvent fastest.

### Rinse or no-rinse

Whether the cleanser needs to be rinsed off with water, or is a no-rinse spot-clean that just wipes and dries. A no-rinse spray lets a makeup artist clean a brush between clients in seconds; a rinse-required bar or shampoo needs a sink and drying time, so it suits end-of-day deep cleaning rather than a quick color change mid-look. [7] [5]

Values: no_rinse_spot_clean, rinse_required.
Question to ask: Does it rinse off, or wipe away dry?

Used as: shown on the card. Data: derived from listing fields, backfill cost low. Look for it as: Not a stated field; infer from cleanser_format (spray/wipe usually no-rinse, bar/liquid usually rinse-required).
Derive from cleanser_format rather than reading each listing individually.

### Palette size

The palette's size tier: small, medium, or large, as brands name their own SKUs. A small palette travels in a kit bag but limits how many colors can be mixed at once without overlap; a large palette gives more clean mixing area for a full-face foundation match but takes up more kit space. [4]

Values: small, medium, large.
Question to ask: Small, medium, or large?

Used as: filter. Data: on the listing, backfill cost low. Look for it as: Named in the title ('Medium Palette') or given as dimensions in inches.
Title keyword match on size word or stated dimensions. The <4in/~5-6in/>6in cutoffs are an uncited heuristic (no fetched source states these boundaries) — use the title's own size word when present instead of the cutoffs.

### Reusable or disposable

Whether the palette is wiped clean and reused, or a disposable single-use sheet. A reusable steel or glass palette is a one-time buy that needs cleaning between uses; a disposable paper palette costs per sheet but removes any risk of carrying old product or bacteria between mixes, which matters most for multi-client work. [4]

Values: reusable_wipe_clean, disposable_single_use.
Question to ask: Wipe it clean and reuse, or toss after one use?

Used as: filter. Data: derived from listing fields, backfill cost low. Look for it as: Derive from palette_material: disposable_paper maps to disposable_single_use, everything else to reusable_wipe_clean.
Derived from palette_material, no separate lookup needed.

### Capacity

Roughly how much the case is built to hold: a single tool or a few, a standard full brush set, or a large kit with brushes plus bottles and palettes. A buyer with five brushes does not need a kit-sized case, and a working artist with a full set and liquids will outgrow a small pouch in a week; matching capacity to the actual kit avoids both wasted space and a case that will not zip shut. [6]

Values: single_tool_or_few, standard_brush_set, full_kit_with_accessories.
Question to ask: A few tools, a full brush set, or a whole kit?

Used as: filter. Data: on the listing, backfill cost medium. Look for it as: Named in the title ('Organizer - Large', 'Deluxe Makeup Case') rather than a slot count field on most listings.
Keyword-match size words ('mini', 'large', 'deluxe', 'pro kit') in the title; default to standard_brush_set when unstated.

### Surface form

Whether the palette is a flat surface with a thumbhole for holding, a flat sheet with no hole, or has built-in wells/cups. A thumbholed oval is held in the off-hand while mixing, the classic artist layout; a flat sheet with no hole sits on a table or kit tray; wells or cups keep separate colors from bleeding into each other before they are blended, which a flat surface does not. [8]

Values: flat_with_thumbhole, flat_no_thumbhole, wells_or_cupped.
Question to ask: Flat with a thumbhole, flat with none, or does it have wells?

Used as: shown on the card. Data: on the listing, backfill cost medium. Look for it as: Usually visible in the product photo rather than named as a field; 'artist palette' in the title implies a thumbhole.
Needs a photo check or the word 'artist palette'/'wells' in the title; default to flat_no_thumbhole when unstated.

### Closure

How the case closes: zipper, roll-up tie, snap/buckle, or magnetic flap. A zippered case seals fully for travel; a roll-up tie holds brush handles upright and visible for quick grab-and-go access during application, trading full closure for faster access. [9]

Values: zipper, roll_up_tie, snap_or_buckle, magnetic_flap.
Question to ask: Zipper, roll-up, snap, or magnetic flap?

Used as: shown on the card. Data: on the listing, backfill cost medium. Look for it as: Usually in the title or photo ('roll-up brush case', 'zippered organizer').
Title keyword match on closure words; needs a photo check when the title is silent.

### Light color setting

Whether the mirror's light is a fixed warm white, fixed cool/neutral white, fixed daylight, or switchable between two or three of these. Makeup applied under warm light can look too dark or orange under daylight and vice versa; a switchable mirror lets the buyer check their look under the lighting they will actually be seen in (indoor warm light vs. daylight), which a single fixed tone cannot do. [2] [1]

Values: warm_white, neutral_white, daylight, adjustable_multi_setting.
Question to ask: One fixed light color, or switchable settings?

Used as: shown on the card. Data: needs research, backfill cost low. Look for it as: In the description on brand spec pages ('3 light settings', 'warm/cool/daylight', 'dimmable LED'); not yet confirmed as a structured field on third-party retail listings.
Keyword-match 'settings'/'temperatures'/'warm'/'cool'/'daylight' in the description; default to adjustable_multi_setting when multiple settings are named without detail.

### Charge duration

How long a lighted mirror runs before recharging, exactly as the brand states it (weeks between charges, or hours of lit use per charge). A buyer judges whether a lighted mirror holds a charge; one brand states calendar weeks between charges, another total hours of lit use, so the two numbers describe different things and should not be converted into each other. [1] [2]

Question to ask: How long does one charge last?

Used as: shown on the card. Data: needs research, backfill cost low. Look for it as: Stated on brand spec pages ('1 Charge Lasts 5 Weeks', 'up to 13 hours per charge'); not yet confirmed as a field on third-party retail listings.
Record the brand's own stated duration and unit (weeks or hours) as-is; do not convert between them. Only applies to lighted, powered mirrors.

### Electrical safety mark

Whether a powered mirror carries a UL Listed mark, a CE mark, both, or states neither. A plugged-in or USB-powered mirror is a mains- or battery-charged electrical appliance; UL listing (US) and CE marking (EU) are the two marks that show it was checked against an electrical-safety standard rather than sold with no safety testing disclosed at all. [10] [11]

Values: UL_listed, CE_marked, both, none_stated.

Used as: shown on the card. Data: needs research, backfill cost medium. Look for it as: Look for a 'UL Listed' or 'CE' mark in the product images or safety-info section; frequently missing from marketplace listings even when present on the physical product.
Check product images for the mark; mark none_stated rather than assuming compliance when it is absent from both images and text.

## Numbers worth computing

| Metric | Formula | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Mixing surface area (sq in) | `palette_length_in * palette_width_in` | Two mixing palettes can share a size label but differ in usable area; multiplying the stated length and width (e.g. Ben Nye's 3.5x5in vs 6x9in SKUs) gives the actual mixing room before colors run into each other. |

## What you give up

- A quick-dry spray lets an artist clean a brush between clients in seconds, but a soap bar or shampoo is the gentler choice for someone who only owns one brush set and can afford the rinse-and-dry time. [7] [5] Board branch: "Faster dry, less conditioning".
- A lighted, multi-setting mirror shows how makeup will look under different light, but it adds a battery or cord to manage and a higher price than a plain glass mirror. [1] [2] Board branch: "More lighting accuracy, more upkeep".
- A hard-shell case survives being thrown in a suitcase; a soft roll-up case packs flatter and shows every brush at a glance but offers far less impact protection. [6] [9] Board branch: "More protection, less packable".

## How to draw it

**Magnification scale** (scale, shows Magnification). Shows how much bigger the reflection looks compared to true size, from 1x up to the mirror's highest zone. This is a proposal, nobody draws it this way yet. [1] [3]

## Words you will meet

- **Alcohol denat (denatured alcohol)**. Ethanol with an additive to make it undrinkable; evaporates fast, which is why it is the base of quick-dry, no-rinse brush cleaner sprays.
- **Surfactant**. A soap-like ingredient that lifts oil and pigment off bristles when mixed with water; the base of brush soap bars and shampoos.
- **No-rinse / spot-clean**. A cleaning step that just wipes or sprays and air-dries, with no water rinse needed.
- **Thumbhole**. A cut-out in an artist's palette sized for a thumb, so the palette can be held steady in the off-hand while mixing.
- **Wells (on a palette)**. Small cupped indentations that keep separate colors from running together before they are blended.
- **Non-porous**. A surface with no tiny pores for product or bacteria to lodge in, so it wipes fully clean; stainless steel and glass are non-porous, most plastics less so.
- **Hard-shell case**. A case built around a rigid outer shell (rather than soft fabric) that resists crushing.
- **Magnification (x)**. How many times larger the reflection looks than true size; 1x is true size, 10x is ten times larger.
- **Color temperature**. How warm (yellowish) or cool (bluish-white) a light looks; makeup mirrors commonly offer 'warm', 'neutral', and 'daylight' settings.
- **Color Rendering Index (CRI)**. A 0-100 score for how accurately a light source shows true color; a higher score (close to 100) means makeup colors look under the mirror the way they will in daylight.
- **UL Listed**. A mark from UL, a US safety-testing organization, showing an electrical product was tested against its safety standards.
- **CE marking**. A mark required on many products sold in the European Economic Area, showing the maker affirms it meets EU health, safety, and environmental rules.
- **USB rechargeable**. Powered by a built-in battery that is topped up through a USB cable, instead of disposable batteries or a permanent cord.

## Where we made a call

- Alcohol/solvent sprays clean faster with no rinse but are harsher over repeated use than a surfactant soap bar or shampoo. (confidence medium). Single-sourced to Ben Nye's own product copy and ingredient list; an independent bristle-durability test comparing the two agents was not reachable this run. [7]
