Scope: Strings, Reeds, Mouthpieces, Picks & Drumheads (supplies > gear > guitar_picks) — five product types bundled under one leaf: guitar/bass/orchestral strings, picks, woodwind reeds, brass/woodwind mouthpieces, drumheads. One register, routed by a `product_type` split into five facet sets.

Seed:
1. Equivalent of harvest_date: mouthpiece_cup_or_opening — the cup-depth/rim-diameter (brass) or tip-opening/facing (woodwind) spec experts rank high but almost no listing states; it's encoded in a model number (e.g. "3C") that needs a brand's own conversion chart to read, so backfill_cost is high and only top-of-catalog items are worth it.
2. Ship's-cook persona notices shelf-life-under-non-ideal-conditions first: cane reeds and uncoated strings are both weather/sweat-sensitive consumables that degrade fast without climate control, so a touring player without an ideal setup weighs synthetic reeds and coated strings far above tone purity — a trade-off a typical tone-focused buyer wouldn't lead with.

Branches:
- product_type → string/pick/reed/mouthpiece/drumhead: each product type uses an entirely distinct spec vocabulary (gauge vs thickness vs strength vs cup vs ply), per all fetched sources.
- string_instrument_family → bowed_orchestral: "bowed instrument strings... usually described by tension rather than gauge" (wikipedia_string_music), so string_gauge is made irrelevant on that branch.
- string_instrument_family → classical_or_flamenco_guitar: nylon strings are not generally sold coated (wikipedia_string_music's coating section is framed around metal strings' corrosion), so string_coating is made irrelevant.
- mouthpiece_instrument_type → woodwind: routes to reed_instrument/reed_material/reed_strength since a woodwind mouthpiece is always paired with a reed (wikipedia_mouthpiece_woodwind).

Noise (spec-sheet rows seen but not made a facet):
- Pick grip texture (plain vs. textured coating) — seen on Dunlop's catalog nav/images but is a minor variant of pick_material's surface finish, not a distinct axis experts shop by; folded into pick_material's "other" note.
- Mouthpiece plating color (gold vs silver) — a sub-choice within plated_brass (corrosion/allergy/tone-color debate per wikipedia_mouthpiece_brass) but not independently decision-driving enough to rank as its own facet at lean depth.
- Reed box count (5, 10, 25 per box) — a packaging/price variable, not an expert judgement axis; price-adjacent and excluded per the price-is-never-a-facet rule.
- No governing safety/performance standard applies to this leaf: strings, picks, reeds, mouthpieces and drumheads are unregulated musical consumables (no ASTM/ANSI/CPSIA-type body governs them), unlike e.g. helmets or car seats elsewhere in `supplies`.
- Hand/world-percussion drumheads (djembe, conga, bongo, doumbek, pandeiro) are out of scope for `drumhead_position`: those are single-membrane heads with no batter/resonant pair, and no sibling catalog.json leaf claims them either; `product_type: drumhead` still covers them for diameter/material, but batter/resonant stays kit/orchestral-only until a dedicated facet is researched.

Corrections (2026-10-26):
- Widened `drumhead_diameter` range from 6-24 to 6-40 in and added wikipedia_bass_drum + remo_drumhead_catalog as evidence; bass-drum and marching-bassline heads commonly exceed 24 in (fix 1).
- Replaced the unsupported "roughly three times longer" / "roughly triples" coating-life claim in `string_coating` and the "Coated string" vocabulary entry with a claim actually in wikipedia_string_music (slows corrosion, no multiplier) (fix 2).
- Rejected the required fix to `reed_strength`'s "2 to 5 in halves" definition: re-fetching wikipedia_reed_mouthpiece (Care and maintenance section) shows it verbatim as "indicated by a number (most commonly 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5, 4, 4.5, and 5)" — the checker's own-page text search appears to have missed this passage; no edit needed.
- Added a new `reed_cut` (filed/unfiled) facet, wired into the `product_type`/`mouthpiece_instrument_type` splits, with a new vocabulary entry and daddario_organic_select_jazz_reeds as a second source (fix 4).
- Closed the then_ask/makes_irrelevant gap on `string_instrument_family`'s classical and bowed-orchestral branches: classical now asks `string_gauge`+`string_winding_shape` (nylon sets are plain/wound and sold by tension bands); bowed-orchestral now makes both plus `string_coating` irrelevant (that vocabulary isn't used in orchestral-string marketing) (fix 5).
- Re-pointed the "Ligature" vocabulary entry from `mouthpiece_material` to `mouthpiece_instrument_type`, where the word is actually used (fix 6).
- Softened the reed-strength judgement's inaccurate caveat; it now cites the same source's "2, 2.5, 3, 3.5, 4, 4.5, 5" passage as corroboration instead of claiming no second chart was reachable (fix 7).
- Stated the hand/world-percussion drumhead scope decision above in Noise (fix 8).
