# Gift Wrap, Bags & Tags

First decide wrap, bag or tags. For wrap, the numbers that matter are roll width, which caps the box size, square feet, which sets the true cost, and paper weight, which almost no listing prints. Shine means it will not recycle. Gift bag size names are not a standard, so compare heights.

## How it works

Two things decide how wrapping paper behaves. The first is how much paper is in it: one professional wrapping service puts cheap wrap around 55 grams per square metre (gsm), where it tears and fights the folds, quality wrap around 80 gsm, and paper of 100 gsm and up a little harder to work, resisting clean folds. The second is what sits on the surface. Plain ink leaves it paper, so it recycles where councils take wrap and stays crumpled when scrunched. Gloss coatings, metallic foil and glitter bond plastic or metal to the paper, so it springs back when scrunched and goes in the bin. Roll width sets the largest box you can wrap in one piece: brand rolls are 30 in, many budget marketplace rolls 17 in. Gift bags and gift boxes trade the folding for fixed sizes, and bag handles may need removing before recycling. [7] [8] [1] [2] [11] [12] [17] [19] [22] [23] [16]

| Family | What it is | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Wrapping paper rolls | Printed paper on a tube, sold by width and length or square feet. | Boxed gifts and anyone wrapping many presents. |
| Flat wrap sheets | Single sheets in fixed sizes, often heavier or handmade paper; the sheet size caps the box. | One special gift, or paper too delicate for a roll. |
| Fabric wraps | Square cloths tied around the gift, such as Japanese furoshiki, reused rather than recycled. | Reuse, odd shapes, and the cloth as part of the gift. |
| Gift bags | Paper or fabric bags with handles, sold by size name and dimensions, often with tissue and a tag. | Awkward shapes, bottles, and no time or skill to wrap. |
| Gift boxes | Decorative lidded or folding boxes sold beside wrap, by size name and dimensions. | Clothes and flat gifts, or a gift that should need no wrapping. |
| Tissue paper | Very light paper used to fill a bag or wrap round and soft items. | Filling bags and wrapping balls or plant pots. |
| Tags and labels | Hang tags tied on, or adhesive labels stuck on, for the to and from. | Every gift; labels for wrapped boxes, hang tags for bags and bottles. |
| Ribbon and bows | Spooled ribbon by material, width and length, and ready-made bows. | Finishing a wrap, and the only way to attach a hang tag to a box. |

1. **What you are buying.** Wrapping paper, a gift bag, tags, or ribbon?
The leaf bundles eight product types that share few facets, so this answer sets every later question. 'Wrapping paper' means a roll unless they name sheets or cloth. Tissue and gift boxes are reached when the query names them.
If wrapping paper roll: ask Roll width, Paper per pack (square feet); skip Gift bag size, Bag handles.
If flat wrap sheet: skip Roll width, Gift bag size, Bag handles.
If gift bag: ask Gift bag size, Bag handles; skip Roll width, Paper per pack (square feet), Paper weight, Back of the paper.
If ribbon and bows: ask Ribbon material; skip Recyclable with household paper, Paper weight, Roll width, Gift bag size.
If fabric wrap: skip Recyclable with household paper, Paper weight, Roll width.
If tags and labels: ask Tag type; skip Roll width, Gift bag size, Paper weight.
If gift box: skip Roll width, Paper per pack (square feet), Paper weight, Back of the paper, Gift bag size, Bag handles.
Skip if already known: a query that names wrap, bag, tissue, gift box, tags, labels or ribbon.

2. **Recyclable with household paper.** Must it go in the recycling, or is foil fine?
Shine is the line recycling bodies draw: foil, gloss and glitter fail, plain and kraft pass. 'Must recycle' filters to yes and shows unknown rows flagged rather than dropped; 'foil is fine' filters nothing.
   If yes: ask Base material.
Skip if already known: a query that says recyclable, eco, kraft, foil or glitter.

## What to surface

### What you are buying

Which of the leaf's product types this is: wrapping paper on a roll, flat sheets, a fabric wrap, a gift bag, tissue, a gift box, tags and labels, or ribbon and bows. Each type asks different questions. Wrap is judged by roll width and square feet; a bag by its height and handles; ribbon by its material. Answer 'wrapping paper' means a roll unless they name sheets or cloth; 'gift bag' means a bag, with tissue as its filler; tissue and gift boxes come from the query. [12] [14] [17] [16]

Values: wrapping paper roll, flat wrap sheet, fabric wrap, gift bag, tissue paper, gift box, tags and labels, ribbon and bows.
Question to ask: Wrapping paper, a gift bag, tags, or ribbon?

Used as: top-level split, filter. Data: on the listing, backfill cost none. Look for it as: In the title: 'Wrapping Paper Roll', 'Flat Wrap', 'Gift Bag', 'Gift Box', 'Hang Tags', 'Ribbon'.

### Recyclable with household paper

Whether the item can go in household paper recycling where the council takes wrap, which in practice means it passes the scrunch test and has no plastic, foil or glitter. Shine is the tell: glossy, metallic and glittery wrap is a laminate of paper with plastic or foil and goes in the bin. Plain and kraft paper recycle, but some councils and mills refuse all wrap and very thin wrap has few usable fibres, so 'yes' means recyclable where wrap is accepted. A recycling arrow on a roll may refer only to the cardboard tube. [1] [2] [3] [9] [19]

Question to ask: Must it go in the recycling, or is foil fine?

Used as: top-level split, filter. Data: needs research, backfill cost medium. Look for it as: Hallmark pages carry 'Sustainability: This gift wrap is recyclable.' Elsewhere it comes from surface_finish and base_material, both mostly unstated.
Yes when the page says recyclable, or surface_finish is uncoated and base_material is stated as paper, recycled paper or kraft. No for foil, glitter, glossy coated, stone paper, plastic film, fabric, ribbon and bows. Bags with rope or cord handles or plastic reinforcement: yes only with a note to remove them first. Unknown otherwise, including textured or embossed finishes, unstated material and tissue; never default to yes.

### Occasion

The occasion the design is printed for, from Christmas and birthdays to an all-occasion solid or pattern. Most printed wrap and bags name one occasion in the title, so this narrows hard. It usually arrives in the query ('Christmas wrapping paper'), so ask only when the query has none. All-occasion solids and kraft cover the gaps. [14] [17]

Values: Christmas and winter holidays, birthday, baby, wedding, Halloween, graduation, all-occasion.
Question to ask: Christmas, birthday, or something for any occasion?

Used as: filter. Data: on the listing, backfill cost none. Look for it as: In the title ('Christmas Gift Bag', 'Birthday Wrapping Paper Roll').

### Tag type

How a gift tag attaches: a hang tag tied on with string or ribbon, or an adhesive label that sticks on. A hang tag needs something to tie to, such as a ribbon, a bag handle or a bottle neck. An adhesive label sticks to any flat face of a wrapped box or bag. Bags sold 'with gift tag' already include one. [17]

Values: hang tag, adhesive label.
Question to ask: Sticker labels or tie-on tags?

Used as: filter. Data: needs research, backfill cost low. Look for it as: In the title ('Hang Tags', 'Adhesive Labels', 'Gift Labels'). Confirmed on Hallmark and Paper Source pages only; marketplace listings were not fetched.

### Roll width

How wide a roll of wrapping paper is, which sets the longest box it can wrap in one piece. The paper must span the box's length plus a little over half its height at each end, so width is a hard limit that length cannot fix. Brand rolls at Hallmark and Paper Source are 30 in wide. Many budget marketplace rolls are 17 in, which some makers call narrow, but marketplace rolls also come at 30 in. Ask for the biggest box; box_fits_roll turns it into a minimum width. [11] [12] [17] [10]

Range: Brand rolls 30 in; many budget marketplace rolls 17 in; marketplace rolls run from 17 to 30 in.
Question to ask: How long and how tall is the biggest box?

Used as: filter, shown on the card. Data: on the listing, backfill cost none. Look for it as: Title or dimensions line as width x length ('30" W x 14' L', '17 x 120 inches', '30 inches x 32.8 feet').
Chart: width bar against the buyer's box length plus height.

### Surface finish

What is on the face of the wrap or bag: plain uncoated ink, a glossy plastic coating, metallic foil, or glitter. Finish decides recyclability and handling. Foil and glossy coatings are laminates that will not recycle; glitter is plastic too. Foil and metallic papers are among the strongest for heavy gifts, by one retail designer's account. The EU ban on loose plastic glitter does not cover glitter fixed to a product, so glitter wrap stays on sale. [2] [9] [19] [10] [6] [13]

Values: uncoated, glossy coated, metallic foil, glitter, textured or embossed.
Question to ask: Plain matte, glossy, foil, or glitter?

Used as: filter, shown on the card. Data: needs research, backfill cost medium. Look for it as: Foil and glitter are in titles ('Ombre Foil', 'Glitter Ghost'). Gloss and matte are rarely named, so plain versus gloss is not a listing field.
Gloss without the word in the text is hard to read from a photo; leave as uncoated only when the page says matte, kraft or recyclable.

### Gift bag size

How big a gift bag is, given as the brand's size name and as height, width and depth in inches. Size names are not a standard: Hallmark Larges run from 10.4 in, a square or horizontal format, to 13 in tall, and Paper Source Smalls are 0.2 to 1 in shorter than Hallmark's. Filter by height and check depth for boxed gifts. Paper Source puts books in a Medium of about 9.5 in, Hallmark in a Large. Answer 'small' maps to mini or small, 'book-sized' to about 9.5 to 13 in, 'bigger' to large and up. [14] [17] [15]

Values: mini, small, medium, large, extra-large, jumbo, bottle.
Question to ask: Small, book-sized, bigger, or a bottle?

Used as: filter. Data: needs research, backfill cost low. Look for it as: Hallmark leads the title with height ('13" ... Large'); W x H x D in the description. Paper Source mixes H x W x D and W x D x H: use the number labelled H; unlabelled, the smallest is depth. Confirmed on Hallmark and Paper Source pages only; marketplace listings were not fetched.
Store the height as the filter value; keep the brand's name only as a label.
Chart: Bag size ladder.

### Paper per pack (square feet)

Total square feet of paper in the roll or set, the only fair way to compare a mini roll, a jumbo roll and a three-roll set. Length alone misleads because rolls differ in width and sets differ in roll count. Square feet, divided into the price, gives the cost per square foot reviewers compare on. Brands also quote 'shirt boxes per roll', but their conversions differ, so square feet is the number to compare. [11] [12] [13] [9]

Used as: sortable, shown on the card. Data: derived from listing fields, backfill cost low. Look for it as: Some titles state it ('35 sq. ft.', '60 sq. ft total'); most listings give only width x length.
When missing, compute width in inches x length in feet / 12.
Chart: Coverage bar.

### Ribbon material

What a gift ribbon is made of and how it is built: curling ribbon, satin, grosgrain, cotton or twine, wired, sheer, or tinsel. Material decides what the ribbon does: curling ribbon and some cotton ribbon curl with a scissor blade, satin can be double-sided, wired ribbon holds a bow's shape, sheer ribbon is light. No ribbon or bow is accepted in paper recycling, so ribbon is a keep-and-reuse item. [17] [1] [19]

Values: curling, satin, grosgrain, cotton or twine, wired, sheer, tinsel.
Question to ask: Curly, satin, rustic twine, or a bow that holds shape?

Used as: filter, shown on the card. Data: needs research, backfill cost low. Look for it as: In the title with width and length ('Satin Black 1" 10YD', 'Velvet Wired Ribbon 2.5", 4 Yards'). Confirmed on Hallmark and Paper Source pages only; marketplace listings were not fetched.

### Base material

What the sheet or bag is made of underneath the print: wood-pulp paper, recycled paper, kraft, stone paper, fabric or plastic film. Stone paper is the trap: it looks and cuts like paper and is sold as eco-friendly, but it is mostly chalk bonded with polyethylene plastic and councils treat it as plastic, not paper. Kraft and recycled stock recycle but are stiffer, so taped seams pop open. Fabric wraps and bags are reused rather than recycled. [5] [18] [17] [9] [19]

Values: wood-pulp paper, recycled paper, kraft paper, stone paper, fabric, plastic film.

Used as: filter, shown on the card. Data: needs research, backfill cost low. Look for it as: Kraft, stone and fabric are usually in the title; recycled content and FSC appear in brand descriptions ('Printed on FSC papers', 'Made of stone').
Search the title and description for stone, recycled, kraft, FSC, cotton, polyester. Leave unknown when nothing is stated rather than defaulting to wood-pulp paper.

### Paper weight

The weight of the wrapping paper in grams per square metre (gsm), the paper trade's shorthand for how much paper is in the sheet. One professional wrapping service, repeated by a second, puts cheap wrap around 55 gsm, which tears and fights the folds, and quality wrap around 80 gsm, which takes crisp folds and flat sides. Paper of 100 gsm and up is a little harder to work and resists clean folds. Listings say 'thick' or 'premium' instead; almost none print the number. [7] [8] [11]

Range: Budget wrap around 55 gsm; quality wrap around 80 gsm; 100 gsm and up resists clean folds.

Used as: shown on the card. Data: needs research, backfill cost high. Look for it as: Rare: 1 of 12 Amazon rolls in one affiliate survey (single source); absent on Hallmark and Paper Source pages. When present, in the title or a bullet.
No reliable proxy: gsm is not thickness, and 'heavyweight' is unregulated. Record when the maker states it; otherwise leave unknown rather than infer from price.
Chart: Paper weight scale.

### Back of the paper

What is printed on the back of the wrap: nothing, a cutting grid, or a second design that makes it reversible. A printed grid makes a straight cut a matter of following a line, and a straight cut is most of what makes a parcel neat. It is rare on marketplace rolls (1 of 12 in one survey) and standard on Hallmark's premium rolls. A reversible roll is two designs for one purchase. [11] [12] [13]

Values: plain, cutting grid, reversible print.

Used as: shown on the card. Data: needs research, backfill cost low. Look for it as: In the description ('cutting grid on reverse', 'gridlines', 'reversible'). Confirmed on Hallmark and Paper Source pages only; marketplace listings were not fetched.

### Bag handles

What the gift bag is carried by: ribbon, rope or cord, twisted paper, or a cut-out in the bag. A paper bag recycles only once rope handles and plastic reinforcements come off, so a bag with paper or cut-out handles can go straight into paper recycling after use. Ribbon handles (grosgrain or satin) read as finished and are what brand pages name. [19] [14] [17] [15]

Values: ribbon, rope or cord, twisted paper, die-cut, none.

Used as: shown on the card. Data: needs research, backfill cost low. Look for it as: In the description ('Paper gift bag with grosgrain ribbon handles', 'black ribbon handles'). Confirmed on Hallmark and Paper Source pages only; marketplace listings were not fetched.

## Numbers worth computing

| Metric | Formula | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Cost per square foot (currency per sq ft) | `price / wrap_area_sq_ft` | Rolls run from mini rolls to bulk rolls and sets bundle several, so the sticker price hides the value. Reviewers screen wrap by price per square foot. [9] [11] |
| Will the roll cover this box (yes or no; sq in) | `fits when box_length + box_height + margin <= wrap_width, with margin > 0 because each end needs a little over half the box height; paper needed = (box_length + box_height + margin) x (2 x (box_width + box_height) + overlap)` | Width is the hard limit: the paper must span the box's length plus a little over half its height at each end, so a box exactly at the limit will not close. The second product says how many such boxes a roll's square feet cover, which brands' box counts do not tell you consistently. [11] |

## What you give up

- At about 55 gsm wrap tears and puckers; around 80 gsm it folds crisply; from 100 gsm it resists clean folds. Heavier is better only up to a point. [7] [8] [11] Board branch: "See more 80 gsm wrap".
- Foil, gloss and glitter look richest and foil is among the strongest papers, but each bonds plastic or metal to the sheet and none can be recycled. [2] [9] [10] Board branch: "See more recyclable wrap".
- Kraft is among the strongest papers for heavy gifts and both kraft and recycled stock recycle, but both are stiffer: one tester found taped seams popping and stacked folds ballooning. [9] [10] Board branch: "See more kraft wrap".
- Stone paper resists water and cuts cleanly, but it is chalk bound in polyethylene, so councils class it as plastic and will not take it. [17] [5] [18]
- A bag needs no wrapping skill and can be reused several times, but it comes in fixed sizes whose names vary by brand, while wrap is cut to the gift. [19] [14] Board branch: "See more gift bags".

## How to draw it

**Paper weight scale** (scale, shows Paper weight). Places a wrap on one gsm line with marks for tears easily, folds crisply and resists clean folds, so a buyer sees where 'thick' really sits. This is a proposal, nobody draws it this way yet. [7] [8]

**Bag size ladder** (bar, shows Gift bag size). Bars of bag height grouped by brand size name show at a glance that one brand's Large is another's Medium. This is a proposal, nobody draws it this way yet. [14] [17]

**Coverage bar** (bar, shows Paper per pack (square feet)). Bars of square feet per pack, labelled with cost per square foot, make a mini roll, a jumbo roll and a three-pack comparable. This is a proposal, nobody draws it this way yet. [11] [9]

## Words you will meet

- **gsm**. Grams per square metre, the weight of one square metre of the paper, which is not the same as its thickness.
- **Scrunch test**. Crumple the paper into a ball: if it stays crumpled it can be recycled, if it springs back it contains plastic or foil.
- **Laminated paper**. Paper with a film of plastic or metal bonded to it, which recycling cannot separate.
- **Kraft paper**. Strong, usually brown, unbleached paper made from long wood fibres.
- **Stone paper**. A paper-like sheet made mostly of chalk bonded with polyethylene plastic.
- **Flat wrap**. Wrapping paper sold as single sheets rather than on a roll.
- **Furoshiki**. A square Japanese wrapping cloth tied around a gift and reused.
- **Cutting grid**. Lines printed on the back of wrapping paper to guide a straight cut.
- **Gusset**. The folded side panel that gives a gift bag its depth.
- **Grosgrain**. A ribbon woven with fine crosswise ridges, often used for bag handles.
- **Wired ribbon**. Ribbon with thin wire in its edges so a bow keeps its shape.
- **Curling ribbon**. Narrow ribbon that curls when a scissor blade is drawn along it.
- **FSC**. The Forest Stewardship Council, whose label says the paper's wood came from managed forests or recycled sources.
- **Tissue paper**. Very light, thin paper used to fill gift bags and wrap soft or round items.

## Where we made a call

- Shiny, metallic or glittery wrap cannot be recycled; plain and kraft paper can, where the council accepts wrap. (confidence high). Recycle Now, London Recycles, Cornwall and one5c agree. Recycle Now adds that some councils and mills refuse all wrap. [1] [2] [3] [9]
- Gift bag size names are not a standard; filter on height and depth, not on Small, Medium or Large. (confidence high). Ours, from brand pages: Hallmark Larges run from 10.4 in (square or horizontal formats) to 13 in, and Hallmark and Paper Source Smalls differ by 0.2 to 1 in. The two brands also put books in different sizes. [14] [17] [15]
- About 80 gsm is the sweet spot for gift wrap; about 55 gsm tears, and 100 gsm and up resists clean folds. (confidence medium). One origin: Nifty Package follows Daily Wrap's wording. A 70 gsm kraft maker, reached through an affiliate survey, independently warns heavy stock folds badly. No lab measurement found. [7] [8] [11]
- Compare wrap by square feet, not by boxes per roll, because brands convert square feet to boxes differently. (confidence medium). Ours. Two brands' stated box counts imply more than twice as much paper per shirt box for one than the other. Each figure has one source, one of them second-hand, so the ratio is indicative; figures in notes.md. [10] [11]
- Stone paper is not kerbside recyclable, despite being sold as eco-friendly. (confidence high). Sources disagree. Paper Source markets it as eco-friendly and reusable. A council classes it as plastic and refuses it; Wikipedia says only dedicated sites recycle it. We side with the council. [5] [18] [17]
- Whether gift tissue can be recycled depends on the council. (confidence medium). Sources disagree. Paper Mart says most curbside programmes reject tissue because its fibres are short; Cornwall collects it. We could not settle which is typical, so tissue is not marked recyclable by default. [19] [4]
- Glitter wrap and bags remain legal in the EU; the microplastics restriction covers loose glitter, not glitter fixed to a product. (confidence high). From the European Commission's own Q&A. It changes nothing about recyclability. [6]
- No product safety standard governs gift wrap; the US regulator says clear used wrap away from fireplaces and never burn it. (confidence medium). CPSC's Holiday Decorating Safety leaflet warns that wrappings burned in a fireplace can flash-fire as they 'ignite suddenly and burn intensely'. Its holiday web page mentions only toy packaging. No product standard found; the warning has one regulator source. [20] [21]
- No product safety standard governs gift wrap, bags or tags; the governing guidance is recycling guidance. (confidence medium). Ours, after looking. The US product safety regulator's holiday page warns only about discarding plastic toy packaging, not about gift wrap. [21]
