# Desk & Paper Tools: research notes

Date: 2026-10-25. Scope: hand and electric tools that act on paper at a desk — staplers (mini, desktop, high-capacity, heavy-duty, electric), hole punches (1 to 4 holes and adjustable), pencil sharpeners (handheld blade, hand-crank, electric) and desktop tape dispensers, plus the long tail of staple removers, letter openers and desk organiser sets, which get a `tool_type` value but no facets of their own because no source treats them as having expert splits.

Not in scope, left to siblings in `supplies > stationery`: staples, paper clips and binder clips themselves (`office-paper-fasteners`; this register only uses staple size as a compatibility fact of the stapler); tape rolls (`tapes`, under crafts; corrected 2026-10-25, `labels` does not cover tape); laminating supplies (`labels`); desk pads (`desk-mats`); binders and their ring systems (`binders`; the hole pattern here is the punch's side of the same match). Paper trimmers and scissors are not in this leaf: Zamana's query file `zamana-expertise/archive/amazon-queries/art-craft-office-supplies-queries.csv` files "paper trimmer" and "craft scissors" under "Cutting & Trimming Tools", and files "stapler" (200), "electric pencil sharpener" (200), "heavy duty stapler", "hole punch", "pencil sharpener", "tape dispenser", "3 hole punch" (100 each), "desk organizer set" (100), "staple remover", "letter opener", "electric stapler", "manual pencil sharpener" (50 each) under "Desk & Paper Tools". That list set the scope. Packing-tape guns (handheld 2 to 3 in dispensers) are excluded here, but no sibling covers them: `shipping-boxes` sends packing tape to `tapes` and never mentions dispensers or guns (corrected 2026-10-25). They are orphaned until a register takes them. Also excluded: staple guns and hammer tackers (hardware), and leather, centre and gasket punches (tools), all of which show up in Amazon results for "heavy duty stapler" and "hole punch". Plier staplers stay in, as staplers.

The leaf bundles four tools with different mechanisms and no shared spec beyond sheet capacity (staplers and punches only). One register; the first split routes by tool and the branches drop what does not apply.

Quote labels: **verbatim** = the words in quotation marks were in raw text I read myself (curl plus tag stripping, the Wikipedia plaintext API, pdftotext, or the CPSC recall API JSON); **fetched excerpt** = a fetch tool summarised or reworded; **search excerpt** = from a search-engine summary only. Nothing in category.json rests on a search excerpt alone. Every quote below is verbatim unless labelled otherwise. Raw texts are in the session scratchpad (`desk-paper-tools/*.txt`).

## Seed

Seed output (recorded verbatim from `seed.py --category desk-paper-tools`):

- Example: olive-oil `harvest_date`: "a facet that experts rank first, that almost no listing carries, and that is expensive to backfill. The honest answer is to list it, mark it researched, and limit backfill to the top of the catalog. Also shows a derived metric hanging off a researched facet."
- Persona: "A competitive endurance athlete, who thinks in cost per unit of the active thing and what is a waste of weight"

1. **This category's harvest date.** The number buyers compare on (sheet capacity) is on every listing, but the fact that decides whether a stapler suits the job is the sheet *range*, which almost no listing carries. Heavy-duty staplers have a floor as well as a ceiling because each staple leg length only clinches a band of stack thicknesses: Max sells the HD-12N/24 as "a heavy-duty stapler for 50 to 240 sheets", and Leitz ships its heavy-duty stapler with four cassettes for "K6 (2-25sheets), K8 (26-40 sheets), K10 (41-55 sheets) and K12 (56-80 sheets)". A 240-sheet stapler bought for 10-page reports is the expert's "best-before date" mistake. Survived as `min_sheets` (researched, brand pages only) and as the derived metric `staple_leg_for_stack`. A second, smaller harvest-date analogue: Swingline's capacity is conditional on its own staple ("30 sheet stapling capacity when used with Swingline S.F.® 4® Premium Staples"). Survived as a note in `staple_size` and a judgement.
2. **What the endurance athlete notices first.** Cost per unit of the active thing: the staple, not the stapler. Some electric staplers take a brand cartridge (Swingline sells a "standard staple cartridge 5000 staple count"), and Wikipedia's staple article warns "Staples from one manufacturer may or may not fit another manufacturer's unit even if they look similar". Survived as `staple_size` value "brand cartridge" and the derived metric `cost_per_1000_staples`. "Waste of weight": dropped. Heavy-duty staplers and punches are heavy on purpose (die-cast bases, long levers; Wikipedia hole punch: "Hole punches for larger volumes of paper (hundreds of sheets) feature longer lever arms"), and no source treats weight as a buying axis for desk tools. The athlete's "effort per unit of work" instinct survived as `reduced_effort`.

## Sources and what each supports

### Standards bodies and regulators

**ISO 838:1974, Paper — Holes for general filing purposes — Specifications (iTeh preview PDF, pdftotext)**
https://cdn.standards.iteh.ai/samples/5207/c7c11e2022304b368909f866a90a5c7b/ISO-838-1974.pdf
- verbatim 3.2: "distance between centres of holes : 80 + 0,5 mm"; "diameter of holes : 6 * 0,5 mm"; "distance from the centre of the holes to the nearest edge of the sheet : 12 + 1,0 mm" (the ± signs come through pdftotext as "+" and "*").
- verbatim 3.1: "the holes shall be arranged symmetrically in relation to the axis of the sheet".
- verbatim: Member Bodies that "expressed disapproval of the Recommendation on technical grounds : Sweden ... U.S.A."
- verbatim field of application: "In general, it does not apply to sheets or documents intended for special filing systems (loose leaf binders, etc.)."
- Supports: the 2-hole 80 mm pattern, 6 mm holes, and the fact that the US and Sweden stayed outside it (hence 3-hole and triohålning). Confidence high.

**US CPSC recall database (saferproducts.gov Recall REST API, JSON)**
https://www.saferproducts.gov/RestWebServices/Recall?format=json&RecallNumber=16041 (and 06009, 03017)
- verbatim 16041 (2015-11-19): "Bostitch Electric Pencil Sharpeners Recalled by Amax Due to Shock Hazard"; "The electric components inside can energize the pencil sharpener, posing a shock hazard."; units "About 44,000"; "Amax has received one report of a consumer who received a shock". Recall page https://www.cpsc.gov/Recalls/2016/Bostitch-Electric-Pencil-Sharpeners-Recalled-by-Amax (cpsc.gov itself returned 403 to curl; the API record carries the same text).
- verbatim 06009 (2005-10-18): "The sharpener's razor blade is exposed when the cover is removed. Also, the pencil sharpener hole is large enough to allow a finger to fit inside. This poses a laceration hazard to children and adults."; "12 children and adults who received cuts to their fingers"; units "About 176,000".
- verbatim 03017 (2002-10-17): Swingline rechargeable stapler: "If a consumer inadvertently releases the spring-loaded staple magazine while holding the stapler close to his/her face, there is a risk of injury"; "Swingline has not received any reports of incidents."
- API queries for "hole punch", "paper punch" and "tape dispenser" returned no recalls.
- Supports: the safety judgement (mains sharpeners are electrical appliances; blade access matters with children). Confidence high on the facts, medium on the generalisation. I could not fetch or verify which UL or IEC standard covers electric pencil sharpeners and staplers, so the register names the regulator, not a standard.

### Primers (Wikipedia, plaintext API)

**Hole punch** https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hole_punch
- verbatim: "In much of the world, two-hole and four-hole punches consistent with ISO 838 are the norm. In the US, the three-hole punch is most common."
- verbatim 888: "Two holes are punched in accordance with the standard, plus two additional holes located 80 mm to the outside of the standard holes. ... allowing 4-hole paper to fit 2-ring binders." "Some 2-hole punches have an "888" marking on their paper guide".
- verbatim US: "For the US letter paper size ... a three-hole standard is widely used. The holes are positioned symmetrically, with the centers 4+1⁄4 inches (108 mm) apart." "The diameter of the holes varies between manufacturers, with typical values being 1⁄4 to 5⁄16 inch (6 to 8 mm)." "there appears to be no well-established official specification for ANSI paper hole patterns".
- verbatim legal: "The four holes are positioned symmetrically with centers 3+1⁄2 inches (89 mm) apart."
- verbatim Sweden: "The centers of the holes are 21 mm, 70 mm and 21 mm apart, 10.5±0.5 mm from the edge".
- verbatim mechanism: "The handle functions as a lever"; "On multiple-hole punches, the positions of individual punch heads may also be adjustable."; "For very large amounts of paper, a paper drill may be used instead of a punch."
- Supports: hole patterns, adjustable heads, the mechanism. Confidence high.

**Ring binder** https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ring_binder
- verbatim: "The North American de facto standard spacing is 4.25 inches (108 mm) between holes." "The four-hole version has no ISO standard. The distances between holes are 80 millimetres (3.1 in) (3 × 8)."
- Supports: second Wikipedia statement of 108 mm and 888 (same publisher as Hole punch, so treated as one source; the second independent source is Swingline and Leitz below).

**Staple (fastener)** https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Staple_(fastener)
- verbatim: "Staples are often described as X/Y (e.g. 24/6 or 26/6), where the first number X is the gauge of the wire (AWG), and the second number Y is the length of the shank (leg) in millimeters. Some exceptions to this rule include staple sizes like No. 10."
- verbatim: "Common sizes for the home and office include: 26/6, 24/6, 24/8, 13/6, 13/8 and No. 10 for mini staplers. Common sizes for heavy duty staplers include: 23/8, 23/12, 23/15, 23/20, 23/24, 13/10, and 13/14."
- verbatim: "Staple strips are commonly available as "full strips" with 210 staples per strip."; "Staples from one manufacturer may or may not fit another manufacturer's unit even if they look similar"; "24/6 staples are described by the German DIN 7405 standard."
- Supports: staple size notation, common sizes, full strip 210, cross-brand fit risk. Confidence high.

**Stapler** https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stapler
- verbatim: "Less effort or easy-squeeze/use staplers, for example, use different leverage efficiencies to reduce the amount of force the user needs to apply."
- verbatim: "With Flat Clinch staplers, the staple legs first pierce the paper and are then bent over and pressed absolutely flat against the paper ... lead to flatter stacking of paper – saving on filing and binder space."
- verbatim: anvil "permanent" and "temporary" settings; "Saddle staplers have an inverted V-shaped saddle for stapling pre-fold sheets to make booklets."; "Some electric staplers can join up to 20 sheets at a time."
- Supports: mechanism, flat clinch, reduced effort, pinning. Confidence high.

**Pencil sharpener** https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pencil_sharpener
- verbatim prism: "So-called "prism" sharpeners ... have no separate moving parts and are typically the smallest and cheapest"; "It is important that the cylindrical alignment hole closely fits the diameter of the pencil ... which would cause stepped or lurching cut-depths and point breakage."; "imported sharpeners may have non-standard-sized alignment guide-holes".
- verbatim planetary: "a hand crank ... rotates a set of helical cylindrical cutters"; "with a more precise finish than a single-blade device"; "a rotatable guide disk ... with multiple holes of different sizes"; "Some versions also offer a regulator of the desired sharpness".
- verbatim electric: "Some electric pencil sharpeners are powered by batteries rather than being plugged into a building's electrical system"; "Auto-stop electric pencil sharpeners are able to sense when the tip of the pencil is long enough, so they stop automatically."
- verbatim: "Sharpeners that have two openings, one for normal pencils and one for larger crayons, are fairly common."
- Supports: the three sharpener families, guide-hole fit, auto-stop, multi-size dials. Confidence high.

**Pencil** https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pencil
- verbatim: "A standard, hexagonal, "#2 pencil" is cut to a hexagonal height of 6 mm (1⁄4 in), but the outer diameter is slightly larger (about 7 mm or 9⁄32 in)".
- Supports: what "standard size" means for the guide hole. One source; the number stays in notes, the JSON says "standard".

**Grammage** https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grammage
- verbatim: "the standard ream is 500 sheets of 17 by 22 in (432 by 559 mm) paper" (for 20 lb copy paper); "Commonly, 20-pound bond paper ranges between roughly 97 and 114 μm ... in thickness."; "Typical office paper has 80 g/m2".
- Derived by me: 20 lb over 500 × 17 × 22 in = 9,072 g over 120.6 m² = 75.2 g/m². So Swingline's "20 lb paper" basis is about 75 gsm against Leitz's 80 gsm, and Leitz's own "3mm/30 sheets (80 gsm paper)" is 100 μm a sheet, inside the 97 to 114 μm range for 20 lb bond. The two bases describe stacks of about the same thickness.
- Supports: the judgement that US and European sheet counts compare. Confidence medium (arithmetic is mine; inputs sourced).

**Tape dispenser** https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tape_dispenser
- verbatim: "John Borden, designed the first tape dispenser in 1932, which had a built-in cutting mechanism and would hold the cut end of the tape". Background only; not cited in the JSON.

### Retail listings (what fields are present)

**Quill.com (Staples' B2B store) product spec tables**, fetched 2026-10-25

Same core and width on Scotch C18, Scotch C60, Quill Contour, Staples executive, JAM Paper dispensers.
- Scotch C25 https://www.quill.com/scotch-tape-dispenser-beige-c25/cbs/040093.html and Scotch HB900 https://www.quill.com/Scotch-Desk-Dispensers-for-3-Core-Tape-Black/cbs/015673.html verbatim: "Dispenser handles tape up to 1 inch wide on 3 inch core"; "Core Size (Inches) 3 | Maximum Tape Width in Inches 1".
- Supports: which fields are on listings: capacity, electric or manual, reduced effort, staple size, strip size, hole count, auto-stop, selector dial, core size, max tape width. One retailer; brand pages (Swingline, Leitz, Max) carry the same fields, which is why capacity, staple size, hole count and core size are marked `listing`. Amazon, Staples.com and Office Depot product pages were not fetched (Wirecutter and cpsc.gov 403'd; I did not try Amazon), so the claim "on most listings" rests on Quill plus brand pages plus product titles that carry sheet counts and hole counts.

### Could not reach

- Wirecutter "best stapler" and "best pencil sharpener" (nytimes.com 403 to curl and to the fetch tool; the Internet Archive was "Temporarily Offline" and its availability API had no snapshot). No specialist reviewer who measures staplers or punches was read. This is the main gap: the register has no tested jam rates, real-versus-rated capacity, or measured effort.
- Web search budget for the session was exhausted after two queries, so sources were reached by known URLs and site sitemaps only.
- Search excerpts seen and not used: a staple-size table (office.alibaba.com, chinastationery.com) giving "26/6 15-25 sheets; 24/6 up to 30; 24/8 40-50; 23/13 90-100" (**search excerpt**; not used); an ISO 838 summary (**search excerpt**, superseded by the pdftotext of the standard).
- homenish.com hole-punch page (fetched, verbatim): "108mm apart or 4 and a half inches apart" — contradicts itself (108 mm is 4.25 in). Not used.

## Data points used for derived metrics

| Metric | Inputs and sources |
|---|---|
| `staple_leg_for_stack` | Swingline 20 lb ceilings: 1/4 in 25, 3/8 in 60, 1/2 in 90, 3/4 in 160, 15/16 in 210 (staple spec tables). Leitz 80 gsm bands: 6 mm 2–25, 8 mm 26–40, 10 mm 41–55, 12 mm 56–80. Max HD-12N/24: 1/2 in 50–110, 15/16 in 200–240. The two systems agree that 6 mm (1/4 in) covers about 25 sheets; above that each brand publishes its own table, so the metric reads the stapler's own table rather than a universal one. |
| `cost_per_1000_staples` | Refill price and staple count from the refill listing (Swingline cartridge "5000 staple count"; strips "210 per strip", "5000 per box"). Price is a listing field, not a facet; the metric exists to compare cartridge and strip staplers on running cost. No sourced typical value, so none given. |
| `capacity_basis` (judgement, not a metric) | 20 lb bond = 75.2 gsm by arithmetic from Wikipedia's 500 sheets of 17 × 22 in; 20 lb caliper 97–114 μm (Wikipedia); Leitz 30 sheets of 80 gsm = 3 mm, so 100 μm a sheet. |

## Against the existing add-on schema

Add-on read: `supplies/stationery/add-ons/desk_paper_tool.jsonc` (`staple_size_raw`, `tape_roll_compatibility_raw`, `sizing.capacity_sheets`), composed with `stationery-standard.jsonc` (empty; its comment names "desk tools (staplers, punches, sharpeners)") and `supplies-standard.jsonc` (`high_signal_markdown`, `sizing.size_stated`, `pack_count`, `pieces_included_text`, `dimensions`, `capacity`, `weight`, `measurements_text`). Kinds below use AGENTS.md rule 4 (vertical anchor, quality currency, hard filter, sizing) or high_signal_markdown.

| Facet in this register | In add-on today | Proposed kind under AGENTS.md | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| tool_type | no | hard filter (enum: stapler, hole_punch, pencil_sharpener, tape_dispenser, other) | The leaf mixes four mechanisms; without this enum every other field is ambiguous. Title-derivable, so cheap to augment. |
| sheet_capacity | yes, `sizing.capacity_sheets` | quality currency, inside `sizing` | Keep in `sizing`: Swingline's Optima electric page sells 20, 30, 50 and 60 sheet variants under one listing. Add a basis field or normalise: US brands rate on 20 lb, European on 80 gsm (close enough to compare; see judgement). |
| sheet_capacity_band | no | derived at query time from capacity_sheets | Not stored. |
| min_sheets | no | high_signal_markdown | Brand pages only (Max, Leitz). Worth a sentence on heavy-duty staplers, not a column. |
| staple_size | partly, `staple_size_raw` | hard filter (enum: 26/6, 24/6, 24/8, no_10, heavy_duty_23, brand_cartridge, other) plus keep raw | Quill lists "Staple Size 26/6" and leg length; Swingline lists "Staple Compatibility". Normalising to an enum makes the refill match a filter. |
| strip_size | no | high_signal_markdown | Full strip 210, half strip 105. Mostly a photo-and-size fact; not a filter. |
| clinch_type | no | hard filter (boolean `flat_clinch`) | Text fact in titles ("Flat Clinch"); a photo does not show it. |
| reduced_effort | no | high_signal_markdown | Quill has a "Reduced-Effort" field, but it is a marketing tier (Swingline Optima, LightTouch, SmartTouch) with no common measure. |
| power_source | no | hard filter (enum: manual, battery, plug_in, battery_or_plug_in, usb_or_rechargeable) | Applies to staplers, punches and sharpeners. Quill "Electric or Manual". |
| hole_pattern | no | hard filter (enum: 1_hole, 2_hole_80mm, 2_hole_5_5in, 3_hole_108mm, 3_hole_2_75in, 4_hole_888, 4_hole_legal, 4_hole_swedish, 6_hole, adjustable, other; spacing variants added 2026-10-25) | The single most consequential punch fact and it is missing. Quill "Number of Holes"; Leitz "Hole Quantity" and "Hole Distance". |
| head_adjustability | no | hard filter (enum: fixed, semi_adjustable, fully_adjustable) | Swingline "Centers: None / Fully Adjustable / semi-adjustable". |
| sharpener_mechanism | no | hard filter (enum: handheld_blade, hand_crank, electric) | Quill "Pencil Sharpener Type". |
| pencil_sizes | no | hard filter (enum: standard_only, standard_and_large, multi_size_dial) | Quill "Selector Dial 1 Hole"; CFS sells a separate large-hole model. |
| point_style | no | high_signal_markdown | Long point and adjustable point are title words on enthusiast brands; absent on office brands. |
| auto_stop | no | hard filter (boolean) | Quill "Auto-Shut Off Feature". |
| blade_replaceable | no | high_signal_markdown | Brand pages and spare-part listings only. Consumable lock-in belongs in the markdown per the supplies-standard comment. |
| blade_guard_interlock | no | high_signal_markdown | Safety flag; the supplies-standard comment already asks for "real safety flags". |
| core_size | partly, `tape_roll_compatibility_raw` | hard filter (enum: 1_in, 3_in, both) plus keep raw | Quill "Core Size (Inches)". |
| max_tape_width | partly, inside the raw field | hard filter (number, in) | Quill "Maximum Tape Width in Inches". |

Add-on and standard fields this register considers noise for desk tools: `sizing.capacity` (litres, ml, oz: no desk tool is bought by volume; the sheet count is the capacity), `sizing.dimensions` beyond a sanity check (photos show size; throat depth is the only dimension experts quote and it is a specific number, not overall length), and `pack_count` except for staplers sold as value packs with staples.

## Branches

Every leg below is traced to a sentence in this file or in category.json. Rewritten 2026-10-25 after the blind check; legs marked (changed) differ from the first pass.

- tool_type = stapler → ask sheet_capacity_band, staple_size, clinch_type, power_source, reduced_effort; drop hole_pattern, head_adjustability, the six sharpener facets, core_size, max_tape_width. Chain: a stapler's capacity is set by staple leg (Swingline staple tables; Leitz cassettes) and its refill by staple size (Wikipedia: "may or may not fit"); reduced effort is sold on desk and heavy-duty staplers alike (Swingline Optima 25 "half the force", Quill InPower "Reduced-Effort"). The drop list now names every facet of the other tools. SUPPORTED (changed: reduced_effort added, drop list completed).
- tool_type = hole punch → ask hole_pattern, sheet_capacity, head_adjustability, power_source, reduced_effort; drop the five stapler-only facets (sheet_capacity_band, staple_size, min_sheets, strip_size, clinch_type), the six sharpener facets, core_size, max_tape_width. Chain: pattern must match the binder (ISO 838; Wikipedia); punches are rated in sheets (Swingline category 10 to 300; Leitz Cosy 30), so the buyer's number is asked directly rather than through the stapler band; electric punches exist (Swingline "Commercial Electric Punch, 3 Holes, 28 Sheets", "Optima 20 Electric Punch"; Amazon "Swingline Electric Hole Puncher 2 Hole, 28 Sheet"); low-force punches exist (Swingline SmartTouch "60% easier"; Amazon "Bostitch Office EZ Squeeze 3-Hole Punch, 20 Sheet Capacity, Reduced Effort"). SUPPORTED (changed: band replaced by sheet_capacity, power_source and reduced_effort added, drop list completed).
- tool_type = pencil sharpener → ask sharpener_mechanism, pencil_sizes, point_style; drop the stapler facets, sheet_capacity, reduced_effort, hole_pattern, head_adjustability, core_size, max_tape_width. Chain unchanged (Wikipedia families and guide-hole fit). SUPPORTED (changed: drop list completed).
- tool_type = tape dispenser → ask core_size, max_tape_width; drop every stapler, punch and sharpener facet except power_source. Chain: Quill "Core Size (Inches)", "Maximum Tape Width in Inches"; width is independent of the core (Scotch C25 1 in on 3 in core; Excell ET-227 "2 in. Wide (3 in. core)"), so both are asked. power_source is left undropped because Amazon's tape results include "U.S. Solid Automatic Tape Dispenser JF-8000 ... AC 110 V". SUPPORTED (changed: drop list completed).
- tool_type = other desk tool → drop every facet except power_source (electric letter openers and the like were not checked, so power is not declared irrelevant). SUPPORTED by definition (changed: drop list completed).
- sheet_capacity_band (now staplers only) = up to 30 sheets → drop min_sheets. Chain: standard 1/4 in staples start at 2 sheets (Leitz K6 "2-25sheets"; Max HD-50F "2 to 24 sheets"). SUPPORTED (changed: the strip_size and clinch_type legs were removed; no source ties strip size to stack, and clinch_type is already asked on the stapler branch).
- sheet_capacity_band = 31 to 60 sheets or over 60 sheets → ask min_sheets, staple_size. Chain: floors begin inside the middle band (Leitz K8 "26-40 sheets"; Max HD-12N/24 "1/2" ... 50 to 110 sheets"), and above 30 the staple varies by model from 1/4 in (Swingline 747 30, Bostitch B175 40 "Staple Size 1/4"") to 3/8 in (Swingline "60") and 8 to 12 mm cassettes (Leitz), so the staple decides both refill and reach. SUPPORTED (changed: middle band now asks min_sheets; over-60 no longer asks reduced_effort, which spans every band; the two bands merged because they now ask the same thing).
- hole_pattern = 1 hole → drop head_adjustability. Chain: one head, nothing to space (Swingline "1-Hole Punch, 1/4" Holes, 5 Sheets"). SUPPORTED by definition (new).
- hole_pattern = adjustable → ask head_adjustability. Chain: adjustable punches are fully or semi adjustable (Swingline "Fully adjustable punch heads"; "Semi-adjustable 8 1/2", 2 3/4", 4 1/4""). SUPPORTED.
- sharpener_mechanism = handheld blade → ask point_style, blade_replaceable, pencil_sizes; drop auto_stop, power_source, blade_guard_interlock. Chain unchanged (Wikipedia prism "no separate moving parts"; Blackwing blades). SUPPORTED.
- sharpener_mechanism = hand crank → ask auto_stop, pencil_sizes, point_style, blade_replaceable; drop power_source, blade_guard_interlock. Chain: CFS crank auto-stop and "Free replacement blade for the Classroom Friendly pencil sharpener"; Blackwing crank dial. SUPPORTED (changed: blade_replaceable added).
- sharpener_mechanism = electric → ask power_source, auto_stop, pencil_sizes, blade_guard_interlock, blade_replaceable. Chain: as before, plus replaceable cutters on electrics (AFMAT store "Rechargeable & Cordless ... Replaceable Blade"; Amazon "Bostitch Office SuperPro Glow ... Replaceable Cutter Cartridge System"). SUPPORTED (changed: blade_replaceable added).

Dropped legs: hole_pattern = 3 holes → "makes hole spacing irrelevant" (no separate spacing facet survived); sharpener = electric → "point_style irrelevant"; hole_pattern = 4 holes → head_adjustability (removed 2026-10-25: the cited 888 route is a guide-bar mark on a fixed 2-hole punch, which head adjustability does not describe; the 888 mark stays in the hole_pattern backfill note); sheet_capacity_band = over 60 → reduced_effort (removed 2026-10-25).

## Trimmed detail

- Hole diameter: ISO 6 ± 0.5 mm, Leitz 5.5 mm, Swingline 9/32 in (7.1 mm), Wikipedia "1⁄4 to 5⁄16 inch (6 to 8 mm)" in the US. Real but no source says a mismatch stops paper fitting a binder, so it is not a facet.
- Throat depth: Swingline heavy-duty 210 "2.5" throat depth"; Swingline sells a long-reach stapler (URL slug "long-reach-stapler-12-inch-reach", page 404'd); Leitz a "NeXXt Metal Longarm" (sitemap only); Wikipedia's saddle staplers for booklets. Too thin to source a value; booklet-making is a niche.
- Pinning and tacking: Swingline 747 "Anvil rotates for pinning", "swing open for tacking"; Wikipedia says the temporary setting "is almost never seen". Low narrowing; dropped.
- Staple capacity rated "when used with" the brand's premium staple (Swingline 747), and Leitz's "10 year guarantee when using Leitz staples": brands tie both capacity and warranty to their own staples. Kept as a judgement.
- Reduced-effort figures: Swingline "50% less effort" (Optima 25, LightTouch) and "60% easier" (SmartTouch punch). One brand, no common test. Not in the JSON.
- Replacement cutter life: Classroom Friendly "Another 5,000 sharpens". One brand. Not in the JSON.
- Swedish triohålning (21, 70, 21 mm) and US legal 4-hole (3 1/2 in, 89 mm): both "4 holes" answers that are not 888. The `hole_pattern` value "4 holes" defaults to 888 (the common one in ISO countries); a buyer in Sweden or using legal paper needs an adjustable punch or the national product.
- Electric stapler power: Swingline Optima 20 "6 AA batteries required ... Not compatible with rechargeable batteries" or AC adapter.

## Corrections

- 2026-10-25, first pass. The validator's schema enum for `vertical` is [formulations, machines, fashion, furnishing, other]; "supplies" is not in it, so the brief's instruction to set `vertical: supplies` fails validation. category.json uses `other` so the register validates; change the schema enum (not the register) if "supplies" is wanted. Reported as a script problem.
- 2026-10-25, STYLE.md pass on the JSON prose. Removed "removes three quarters of the catalog" from the tool split (an invented share); the tape dispenser's "serrated edge" became "fixed blade" (Quill bullets say "cutting blade"); "hardened cylinder" became "hard metal cylinder" (Wikipedia's wording); "electric staplers often take a sealed cartridge" became "some" (Swingline's Optima electrics take strips, only its cartridge model takes a cartridge); "fixed heads are what the highest-capacity punches use" restated as Swingline's 100- and 300-sheet punches, because Swingline also sells a 160-sheet adjustable punch; "suit offices that tape all day" replaced by Scotch's own "Heavy Duty" name for the 3 in core model; "23-gauge staples go to 1 in legs" restated as 24 mm (Wikipedia 23/24; Swingline 15/16 in). Summary trimmed to the 60-word cap.
- 2026-10-25, viewer pass. `tests/viewer-browser.py` passed 6 of 6 (1380, 768, 390 px; light and dark) on a scratch copy. The tool split's `makes_irrelevant` lists were cut to the other tools' entry facets (for example stapler: hole_pattern, sharpener_mechanism, core_size) because the full lists crowded the tree; the facets below those entries drop with them, so the legs traced under "Branches" still hold.

## Corrections after the blind check (2026-10-25)

Sources for these fixes were fetched by me on 2026-10-25 with curl and read as stripped text (raw files in the scratchpad `fix-desk-paper-tools/raw/`): Amazon US search titles for "stapler", "heavy duty stapler", "hole punch" and "tape dispenser"; Wikipedia Hole punch, Ring binder, Pencil, Pencil sharpener and Stapler (plaintext API); ISO 838 (pdftotext); Quill C25, C38 and B175; Swingline staple pages for 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 3/4 and 15/16 in legs and the 5,000-staple cartridge; Swingline punch and heavy-duty punch categories, the light-duty and 300-sheet punches, SmartTouch, 747, Optima 20 and 25; Max HD-50F and HD-12N/24; Leitz NeXXt, 5551 and Cosy; X-ACTO; CPSC API 16041 and 06009; the AFMAT and Classroom Friendly Shopify catalogues. My further Amazon fetches ("electric pencil sharpener" and others) were refused by the session's permission classifier, and web search was out of budget, so the electric-sharpener titles (and the WOD and Bostitch "Dual Clinch" titles) come from the checker's raw downloads, which I read directly.

- Tape rule (CONTRADICTED, fix 1): removed "follows the core" and "3 in core up to 1 in" from `core_size`, `max_tape_width` and judgement 7; 3 in core models now run from 1 in (Scotch C25) to 2 in or more (Excell); added core value "1 in and 3 in"; judgement 7 lowered from high to medium.
- `max_tape_width` is now novice-answerable with "Standard 3/4 in tape, or wider?", because core alone does not narrow a tape buyer.
- `core_size` question rewritten to "Small desk rolls (1 in core), big ones (3 in), or both?" so a novice can answer without knowing the term and can pick both.
- Mechanism: "the hub fits one core size" became "a hub sized to the roll's core" (Officemate and others fit both).
- `sheet_capacity_band` scoped to staplers only (fix 2): punch buyers are no longer routed into stapler facets; the hole-punch branch now asks `sheet_capacity` directly, which became novice-answerable ("Most sheets you'll punch at once?").
- `sheet_capacity_band` question now asks for the usual stack ("Usual stack to staple: up to 30, 31 to 60, or more?"), matching judgement 2; values renamed "31 to 60 sheets" to remove the overlap at 30 (fix 3).
- `sheet_capacity_band` now says the 30 and 60 edges are the register's own; the "heavy duty" skip was dropped because Amazon titles call 30- to 50-sheet staplers heavy duty (fix 3).
- `sheet_capacity_band` backfill rule rewritten so "over 60" has a test (ask the number) instead of "reaches the band's top" (fix 3).
- `min_sheets` made novice-answerable ("Thinnest stack you'll staple with it?") because the band branches now ask it.
- "6 mm legs reach about 25 sheets" restated in the mechanism and band as brands rating 1/4 in (6 mm) legs at 25 to 40 sheets (Swingline 25, 747 30, NeXXt 30, B175 40) (fix 4).
- `sheet_capacity`: desk staplers 20 to 30 became 20 to 40; desktop punches 10 to 20 became 10 to 30; heavy-duty punches 40 to 300 became 24 to 300; heavy-duty staplers stated as topping out at 210 (Swingline) to 240 (Max) (fixes 4, 11).
- Band legs: up to 30 lost strip_size and clinch_type (WEAK); 31 to 60 now asks min_sheets and keeps staple_size with a restated premise; over 60 lost reduced_effort (WEAK); the two upper bands merged into one leg (fixes 4, 10).
- `hole_pattern`: added values "1 hole" and "6 holes"; question rewritten to "Single hole, or for a 2-, 3-, 4- or 6-ring binder?" (fix 5).
- `hole_pattern`: "Answers map directly" removed; the facet now gives the spacing variants (half-letter 2 3/4 in, filebinder 5 1/2 in, legal 3 1/2 in, Swedish 21/70/21 mm) and the backfill stores spacing raw (fix 5).
- "Outside the US" became "most countries ... US and Canada" in the summary, split rationale and skip rule (ISO 838 lists Canada's disapproval; Ring binder "Canada and the United States") (fix 5).
- ISO 838 reference corrected: Sweden disapproved and then approved, Canada disapproved the conversion; added that the standard's own field of application excludes loose-leaf binders, and judgement 1 now says the binder use of 80 mm rests on Wikipedia and Leitz (fixes 5, 6).
- New leg hole_pattern = 1 hole drops head_adjustability; leg 4 holes → head_adjustability removed (WEAK; 888 is a guide mark on a fixed punch) (fix 7).
- `blade_guard_interlock` and judgement 6 rewritten: the interlock guards fingers from the cutter but does not address the shock (16041) or novelty jumbo-pencil blade (06009) recalls; UL Listed (retail titles) and GS (Leitz) named as marks to look for, with no standard number (fix 8).
- `cpsc_recalls` split into `cpsc_16041` and `cpsc_06009`, each with its own URL; recall 03017 dropped from the JSON because no claim used it (fixes 8, 11).
- Tool-branch drop lists completed so every facet of the other tools is listed; the viewer-pass note that lower facets "drop with them" was wrong and is superseded by the rewritten Branches section (fix 9).
- power_source is deliberately not dropped on the tape and other-tool legs, because Amazon lists an AC-powered automatic tape dispenser and I did not check other tools (partial rejection of fix 9).
- Hole-punch branch now asks power_source and reduced_effort (Swingline electric punches 20 and 28 sheets; SmartTouch and EZ Squeeze) (fix 10).
- Crank and electric sharpener legs now ask blade_replaceable (CFS replacement blade; AFMAT and Bostitch SuperPro replaceable cutters); `blade_replaceable` text updated (fix 10).
- References re-pointed and split (fix 11): `max_staplers` → `max_hd12n`, `max_hd50f`; `leitz_staplers` → `leitz_heavy_duty`, `leitz_nexxt`; `swingline_staplers` → `swingline_747`, `swingline_optima20`, `swingline_optima25`; `swingline_staples` kept for the 1/4 in page plus `swingline_staples_38`, `_12`, `_34`, `_1516` and `swingline_cartridge`; `swingline_punches` plus `swingline_hd_punches`, `swingline_light_punch`, `swingline_smarttouch`; `quill_listings` → `quill_c38`, `quill_c25`, `quill_b175`, `quill_inpower`, `quill_eps8hd`, `quill_mightymite`.
- New references: five Amazon search-title pages, `afmat_store` and `wiki_pencil`.
- `tool_type` backfill now excludes staple guns and hammer tackers, leather, centre and gasket punches, and packing-tape guns; plier staplers added to the stapler family and vocabulary (fix 12).
- Scope paragraph corrected: tape rolls go to `tapes` (crafts); packing-tape guns are orphaned, since `shipping-boxes` does not cover them (fix 12).
- `power_source`: added value "USB or rechargeable" and the matching title rule; dropped the single-source "most electric staplers take 20 to 60 sheets" (fix 12 and the power_source finding).
- `pencil_sizes`: added a mm-range rule (top at 8 mm or less is standard only; 11.5 mm or more is standard and large), sourced from Wikipedia Pencil and AFMAT and Amazon titles (fix 12).
- `point_style`: source changed from researched to listing; "office and school sharpeners rarely state it" replaced, since electric titles carry it (fix 13).
- `min_sheets`: the "record unknown ... start at 2" contradiction fixed to "record 2 for desk staplers on 1/4 in staples"; the title is now the first place to look (fix 13).
- `staple_size`: noted that titles rarely state it (about 10 of 119 titles across my two Amazon stapler searches) and that spec tables are the source (fix 13).
- `clinch_type`: added that Bostitch's "Dual Clinch" is not flat clinch (Part D).
- `sharpener_mechanism`: added that a few blade sharpeners are cranked (Wikipedia), and moved the shock-risk wording out of this facet (Part B split 4).
- Rejected: moving "desk organizer set" out of `other desk tool`. Zamana's own query file files it under Desk & Paper Tools, and the checker did not name a leaf that takes it; it stays as a tool_type value with no facets.
- Rejected in part: the single-source brand numbers (Leitz cassettes, Max 50–240, Swingline per-leg ceilings, 25% and 30%) stay. Each is one brand describing its own product, attributed by name, and each is now on its own URL. The checker graded them SUPPORTED.
- `hole_pattern` backfill restores the "more than one binder maps to adjustable" rule that went out with "Answers map directly"; the `quill_c25` support line now names the Scotch C25 so it does not read as a general 3 in core rule.
- Rebuilt 2026-10-25: validate.py, render.py and viewer.py all exited 0 (19 facets, 4 splits, 43 references).
