# Hair Combs & Brushes

A comb's or brush's tooth or bristle spacing and material, not its price, decide whether it tensions hair for shine and smoothing or lets it glide through for gentle detangling. Hair texture decides which side of that trade a buyer needs; goal decides whether a barrel, cushion, or bare tooth row does the work.

## How it works

A comb is a single row of rigid teeth that part, detangle, and distribute product along the hair without touching the whole shaft at once; its material (plastic, wood, metal) decides how much static charge builds up and how gently the teeth glide through knots. A brush mounts many bristles on a pad or barrel so more hair is contacted at once: stiff, tightly packed natural boar bristle tensions the shaft and spreads scalp oil for shine, while synthetic nylon or widely spaced flexible teeth bend around knots instead of forcing through them, trading some smoothing for less breakage. A round or vent brush adds a barrel, sometimes a heat-retentive ceramic or metal one, so a blow dryer can set the shape while brushing. [3] [4]

| Family | What it is | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Comb | A single row of rigid teeth that detangles, parts, and sections without touching the whole shaft at once. | Detangling, parting, sectioning, and fine work like nit removal. |
| Brush | Many bristles on a pad or barrel contact more hair at once, smoothing the cuticle and spreading scalp oil. | Smoothing, shine, volume, and blow-dry styling. |

1. **Comb or brush.** A comb, a brush, or both in one?
A comb's defining spec is its tooth row and material; a brush's is its bristles and form. This fork decides which facet set applies before anything else does.
If comb: ask Comb material, Tooth spacing; skip Brush form, Bristle material, Barrel material.
If brush: ask Bristle material, Brush form; skip Tooth spacing, Comb material.
If comb_and_brush_combo: ask Comb material, Bristle material.
Skip if already known: a query that already names 'comb' or 'brush', an earlier answer naming a bristle or tooth material.

2. **Main job.** Detangle, add shine and smoothness, style with heat, or soothe your scalp?
Goal sets what matters next: spacing for detangling, bristle material for shine, a heat-retentive barrel for styling, or a soft cushion base for scalp care.
If heat_styling: ask Brush form, Barrel material; skip Tooth spacing, Comb material.
If detangling: ask Tooth spacing; skip Barrel material.
If shine_and_smoothing: ask Bristle material; skip Tooth spacing, Barrel material.
If scalp_care: ask Bristle material, Brush form; skip Barrel material, Tooth spacing.
Skip if already known: an earlier answer naming detangling, shine, blow-drying, or scalp massage.

3. **Hair texture.** Straight, wavy, curly, or coily?
Texture decides tooth spacing and whether dry barrel-brush styling even suits the hair: both AAD and Wikipedia tie curly or coily hair to wet, wide-tooth detangling.
If curly or coily: ask Tooth spacing; skip Barrel material.
If straight or wavy: ask Bristle material.
Skip if already known: an earlier answer or stored profile naming the user's hair texture.

## What to surface

### Comb or brush

Whether the item is a comb (a single row of teeth), a brush (bristles on a pad or barrel), or a two-sided combo. It decides which spec actually matters: a comb's tooth material and spacing, or a brush's bristle material and form. Asking this first avoids asking about a barrel on a comb or tooth spacing on a brush. [3] [4]

Values: comb, brush, comb_and_brush_combo.
Question to ask: A comb, a brush, or both in one?

Used as: top-level split, filter. Data: derived from listing fields, backfill cost low. Look for it as: Derive from the product title ('comb' vs 'brush') and the existing bristle_type field's value.
Title keyword match covers almost every listing; the rare combo tool usually says 'comb and brush' or 'detangle comb/brush set' in the title.

### Main job

What the buyer mainly wants the tool to do: detangle, add shine and smoothness, style with heat, or massage the scalp. Each goal points at a different spec. Detangling wants wide, flexible spacing; shine wants tightly packed natural bristle; heat styling wants a barrel brush; scalp care wants a soft cushion base rather than stiff bristle or a barrel. [3]

Values: detangling, shine_and_smoothing, heat_styling, scalp_care.
Question to ask: Detangle, add shine and smoothness, style with heat, or soothe your scalp?

Used as: top-level split, filter. Data: needs research, backfill cost low. Look for it as: Often implied by the product's marketed category ('detangling brush', 'round styling brush', 'scalp massage brush') rather than a stated field.
Keyword-match the title and category name against the four values; default boar-bristle-only brushes to shine_and_smoothing and round/vent brushes to heat_styling.

### Hair texture

The buyer's hair pattern: straight, wavy, curly, or coily. Curly and coily hair tangles and frizzes differently from straight hair, so the right tool and technique change: AAD recommends combing curly hair wet, before rinsing out conditioner, rather than brushing it dry. [1] [3]

Values: straight, wavy, curly, coily.
Question to ask: Straight, wavy, curly, or coily?

Used as: top-level split, filter. Data: needs research, backfill cost low. Look for it as: When a listing targets a texture, it is usually in the title or bullets ('for curly hair', 'detangles coarse, coily hair'); not every listing says so.
Keyword-match title/bullet texture words; leave null rather than infer texture from brush_form alone, since most tools are sold as suiting more than one texture.

### Bristle material

What the brush's bristles are made of: natural boar bristle, nylon, a boar-nylon mix, flexible silicone, metal pins, or other. Boar bristle redistributes scalp oil for shine but detangles thick or coarse hair less effectively; nylon and mixed bristle detangle more strongly at some cost to shine. [5]

Values: boar_natural, nylon, boar_nylon_mix, silicone_flex, metal_pins, other, unspecified.
Question to ask: Natural bristle for shine, or synthetic to detangle?

Used as: filter, shown on the card. Data: on the listing, backfill cost low. Look for it as: Almost always in the title ('Boar Bristle Hair Brush', 'Nylon Detangling Brush').
Title keyword match; this already matches the existing add-on's bristle_type field for brushes.
Chart: Shine vs gentleness map.

### Brush form

The brush's shape and construction: flat paddle, round barrel, vented, cushion-mounted, or a flexible-toothed detangler. Form decides the job: paddle smooths and tames flyaways, round adds curl and volume with a dryer, vent speeds drying, cushion softens detangling, and flexible-toothed detanglers are built to glide through knots without pulling. [3] [7]

Values: paddle, round_barrel, vent, cushion, detangling_flex.
Question to ask: Paddle, round, vent, cushion, or detangling brush?

Used as: filter, shown on the card. Data: on the listing, backfill cost low. Look for it as: Almost always in the title ('Round Brush', 'Paddle Brush', 'Vented Brush', 'Detangling Brush').
Title keyword match covers nearly every listing.

### Tooth spacing

How closely a comb's teeth are set: wide, medium, fine, or nit-removal fine. Wide spacing is gentlest, for detangling wet or curly hair; fine spacing tensions and smooths; nit-fine spacing is close enough to catch lice eggs, which NHS guidance names as the first-line check and removal method. [4] [2]

Values: wide, medium, fine, nit_fine.
Question to ask: Wide, medium, fine, or nit-removal teeth?

Used as: filter, shown on the card, sortable. Data: on the listing, backfill cost low. Look for it as: Usually in the title ('Wide Tooth Comb', 'Fine Tooth Comb', 'Nit Comb', 'Lice Comb').
Title keyword match; default wide-tooth-looking detangling combs to wide, nit/lice combs to nit_fine.
Chart: Shine vs gentleness map.

### Comb material

What the comb's teeth and body are made of: plastic, wood or horn, metal, carbon fibre, or a mix. Material decides static buildup: plastic combs generate static and can roughen the cuticle into frizz, while wood (boxwood specifically) does not and is gentler on the scalp. [4]

Values: plastic, wood_or_horn, metal, carbon_fiber, mixed, unspecified.
Question to ask: Plastic, wood, or metal teeth?

Used as: filter, shown on the card. Data: on the listing, backfill cost low. Look for it as: Almost always in the title ('Wood Comb', 'Metal Pin Comb', 'Carbon Fiber Comb').
Title keyword match; default to plastic when the title says nothing, since it is the most common material.
Chart: Shine vs gentleness map.

### Barrel diameter

The width of a round or vent brush's barrel, in millimetres. A narrower barrel tensions hair into a tighter curl; a wider barrel makes a looser wave or adds volume instead, so the right size depends on the curl wanted, not hair length. [8] [9]

Range: 25 to 70 mm. Kent Brushes' round-brush line runs about 33 to 70mm; Denman's smallest named curling barrel is 25mm.

Used as: filter, sortable. Data: needs research, backfill cost medium. Look for it as: Stated in mm on mid-to-premium brand sites, often right in the product name ('45mm Vegan Bristle Round Brush'); budget listings often just say 'small/medium/large'.
Limit backfill to items where brush_form is round_barrel or vent; leave null for paddle, cushion, and detangling forms, which have no barrel.

### Barrel material

What a round or vent brush's barrel core is made of: ceramic, metal, boar bristle, or plain plastic. Ceramic and metal barrels heat up during blow drying and help set the style faster; plain plastic barrels do not retain heat the same way. [3]

Values: ceramic, metal, boar_bristle, plastic, unspecified.

Used as: filter, shown on the card. Data: needs research, backfill cost medium. Look for it as: When stated, it's a bullet point or the words 'ceramic', 'ionic', or 'tourmaline' on mid-to-premium round brushes; base listings often omit it.
Limit backfill to items where brush_form is round_barrel or vent; leave null for paddle, cushion, and detangling forms, which have no barrel.

## What you give up

- Pure boar bristle tensions the hair and spreads scalp oil for shine, but a brand that also sells a nylon or mixed-bristle version markets it specifically as the stronger detangler for thicker hair. [5] [3] Board branch: "More shine, less detangling power".
- Tight spacing tensions and smooths hair, which suits straight or wavy hair brushed dry, but on curly or coily hair the same tension expands and disrupts the curl pattern, which is why dermatology guidance moves to wide-tooth wet combing instead. [3] [1] Board branch: "Gentler on curls, less smoothing".

## How to draw it

**Shine vs gentleness map** (two axis map, shows Bristle material, Comb material, Tooth spacing). Plots each tool on two axes, shine/smoothing power and gentleness on tangled or curly hair, so a buyer can see the trade in one look instead of reading a materials list. This is a proposal, nobody draws it this way yet. [5] [3] [4]

## Words you will meet

- **Tine / tooth**. One of the pointed divisions along a comb's edge that separates and guides the hair.
- **Boar bristle**. Natural bristle from a hog, prized for spreading scalp oil along the hair for shine.
- **Barrel**. The cylindrical core of a round brush that bristles wrap around, sometimes heated by a blow dryer.
- **Cushion brush**. A brush whose bristles sit on a flexible rubber pad instead of a rigid base, for gentler detangling.
- **Nit / detection comb**. A very fine-toothed comb used wet, through conditioner, to find and remove head lice and their eggs.
- **Sebum**. The scalp's natural oil, which brushing spreads along the hair shaft to add shine.
- **Static (triboelectric) charge**. An electric charge that builds up when hair rubs certain materials, puffing hair up and causing frizz.
- **Ionic / negative-ion claim**. A brand marketing term for a brush said to release ions that calm frizz; not independently measured.
- **Detangling (flex-tooth) brush**. A brush with widely spaced, flexible teeth designed to glide through knots without pulling.
- **Vent brush**. A brush with gaps through its pad or barrel that let air from a blow dryer pass through for faster drying.

## Where we made a call

- Pure boar bristle gives the most shine; nylon detangles thick or coarse hair more effectively. (confidence medium). Single-sourced to Mason Pearson's own product copy; four independent corroborating health or dermatology sources were unreachable this run. [5]
- Curly and coily hair should be detangled wet with a wide-tooth comb, not brushed dry. (confidence high). AAD advises combing curly hair in the shower before rinsing out conditioner; Wikipedia notes curly hair expands when brushed dry. Two independent sources agree. [1] [3]
- Static-prone materials like plastic add frizz; low-static materials like wood or boar bristle do not. (confidence medium). Single-sourced to Wikipedia's Comb article; independent corroboration was unreachable this run, so this is weaker than the other claims here. [4]
- Fine-toothed detection combing, not medication, is the first-line check and removal method for head lice. (confidence medium). NHS guidance, read as raw text, is the source; a CDC page agrees in a fetch summary only, so it is not counted as a second verified source. [2]
- "Ionic" or negative-ion claims on detangling brushes are unverified brand marketing, not a measured effect. (confidence low). Only the brand's own homepage describes the mechanism; no independent measurement of ion output or any effect on hair was found. [6]
